So who is going to Vapnartak this Sunday and what's on your list?
I've preordered some 15mm SCW from Peter Pig, SAGA Normans from Gripping Beast and a Schneider tank from Old Glory. I'm going to pick up some paints and basing supplies.
I don't know how much of the show I'll get to see though as I'm helping out on the Table Top Sale.

Sane Max02 Feb 2012 8:52 a.m. PST

Me, as always – my fave show of the year.

Not a lot I need – I will be ordering a couple of hundred quid's stuff from Peter Pig since I have a 20% off discount voucher, so will not be buying there.

I tend to wander around shows going 'Oohh' and buying stuff, to be honest.

If anyone has coat d'armes paints I will stock up, also glue, flock, other essentials.

Vexillia – Happy Birthday for then!

Peterborough WGC – are you going to buy any 6mm Napoleonics by any chance? I see Baccus for one are attending.

Count Belisarius02 Feb 2012 11:09 a.m. PST

I shall be there. .

First time for me! So I'm gonna give the table top sale ago, it time to off load some of the stuff I've being hoarding and invest in something new! What I don't know but I'm gonna have a good look round, my wife is dreading it but I need someone to carry my stuff to the sale area.

Sean Clark02 Feb 2012 11:46 a.m. PST

Me. Collecting a Peter Pig preorder and browsing for the next big thing!

Not this year – fed up of the car park being a mud bath and the road being a window smashing paradise.

Not this year – fed up of the car park being a mud bath and the road being a window smashing paradise.

I wouldn't worry. This year you'll probably need snow shoes.

We'll be there, room on the right, at the bottom of the stairs!

I'm going to pick up some paints and basing supplies.

Coincidentally, we'll have paints and basing supplies with us!

hohoho02 Feb 2012 1:10 p.m. PST

Aubrey, thankfully not doing any more 6mm for now, I have a few bits and pieces still to paint (myself!) anyway, the main draw is picking up the Pendraken order I've made and mooching around a show I've not been to for a while.

Andrew Beasley, is it a bad spot? I can't imagine it being particularly rife with carjackers?

TonicNH02 Feb 2012 2:24 p.m. PST

Been every year to the YWS show since the days of St Savourgate so not planning on missing this one…

von Paulus02 Feb 2012 3:31 p.m. PST

That picture of the car park brings back bad memories of last year being stuck up to the axle in mud. It very nearly resulted in me having to be towed out. Ruined an otherwise good show!

I am hoping that the trade tables will be as well organised and run as last year.

Given up for good02 Feb 2012 3:45 p.m. PST

@PWGC

The last two times I have been I saw two side windows broken in and talking with one driver this was the second time this had happened at the show.

From the racing folk I know the closer to the park the more risk.

Jeremy Sutcliffe02 Feb 2012 3:59 p.m. PST

I'll be there.

Being a complete cheapskate, not only did I buy some Museum Miniatures figures during their 25% off January sale, I'll be collecting them as well to save postage.

This is me in my GWP sweat shirt if you
(a) want to say hello
(b) run in the other direction

Re: The parking at the Racecourse.
I just can't see it being the same problem as last year. Last winter we had heavy snow followed by a sudden thaw plus lots of rain. This winter has so far been relatively dry. There has also been a heavy frost overnight and the ground where I live (about 5 miles from the Racecourse) is rock hard.
Yes (as cosmickanga points out) snow is forecast but the local weather is predicting light snow on Saturday afternoon and into Saturday evening. So hopefully that won't cause a problem once you get there.

Anyway if you are coming I hope you all have safe and pleasant trips to York and home. It should be a great show.

Cheers
Aubrey

Unrepentant Werewolf at work03 Feb 2012 3:14 a.m. PST

As another local I can confirm what Aubrey just said. It may be cold and frosty but the one thing you'll not have to worry about is mud!

AnthonyWB03 Feb 2012 7:24 a.m. PST

All depends on the weather, and if I get my car back from the menders this afternoon.

I had to miss last years due to last minute illness, so hopefully I shall get along to this show.

Bye bye03 Feb 2012 9:57 a.m. PST

I will be there running my version of the Charles Grant classic scenario -Sawmill Village – using Prince August 40mm figures with green painted mdf terrian boards and hills.

I will be using the War Game rules in the morning and Charge in the afternoon.

jameshammyhamilton03 Feb 2012 1:41 p.m. PST

I have been in the past to play in various tournaments. I missed last year because I was on holiday and just can't drum up the enthusiasm for this year. I suspect this is a good thing as I already have far too much stuff to paint :D

MWCentre04 Feb 2012 8:30 a.m. PST

Is it still on?

hohoho04 Feb 2012 8:45 a.m. PST

Why wouldn't it be?

von Paulus04 Feb 2012 8:48 a.m. PST

Given the snow – is it still on? Would hate to make the effort only to find traders hadn't turned up en masse and the thing was cancelled? Suppose it depends what the weather is going to do tonight and into tomorrow?

MWCentre04 Feb 2012 9:00 a.m. PST

We have to make a decision in the next hour!

Sean Clark04 Feb 2012 10:04 a.m. PST

Well the snow is pretty bad here. I hat to think what the M62 is like over the pennines. I'll review the situation at 0630hrs.

I hope any organiser will update with local conditions for the travellers amonmgst us!

Cyclops04 Feb 2012 10:31 a.m. PST

In Northumberland it's turned to sleet. According to the Met Office the snow should pass the North by pretty quickly and linger a bit over the South East. Should be fine for tomorrow as any snow in York should freeze overnight. I'll take ice over mud.

Aubrey04 Feb 2012 12:06 p.m. PST

Hi,

I got back from the racecourse half an hour ago. Show is definitely going ahead ! I'll post a new thread to that effect.

Cheers
Aubrey

Sean Clark04 Feb 2012 12:34 p.m. PST

Thanks Aubrey.

Volleyfire04 Feb 2012 2:08 p.m. PST

We're reviewing the conditions in the morning, but its snowing hard here in Mid Lincs and half our gang on the coast have already decided to abandon going tomorrow and are going to Hammerhead next week instead unfortunately. Hopefully it doesn't start drifting up on the Wolds and also hopefully the car parks are rock hard with permafrost if we do go.

Volleyfire05 Feb 2012 3:35 a.m. PST

Reluctantly had to abandon the idea, drifts up to 1ft deep here this morning, mainly single track even on A roads and someone from York came over yesterday in 2 hrs, but took 4 1/2 hrs to get back last night so we decided not to risk it.

AnthonyWB05 Feb 2012 5:26 a.m. PST

Being as it took me until 10.30am to clear my drive enough to get the car out onto our side road, and then clear enough of the snow from the road to allow access to the main road, I do not now have the time or inclination to come up to York from Chesterfield.

We had somewhere between 4 to six inches of snow fall in our neck of the woods! I am knackered now and need to go for a lie down.

Hopefully the adverse weather has not affected the show too badly.

Goose66605 Feb 2012 6:41 a.m. PST

I wouldn't even consider it now, not after last trip.
And thats before any snow, ice factor.

As Mr Beasley says.. car parking was dire. Its a muddly swamp. And the area is rife for vehicle crime.

The actual building space it self is not too bad. Does give your legs a good workout mind with the stairs.

Jeremy Sutcliffe05 Feb 2012 9:50 a.m. PST

Been there, seen it spent there, back home.

As I said above I went upon the Saturday and stayed over down in York. Had a night of thinking "I'm here but will the the traders be?"

Well certainly the ones I was interested in were. I suspect a handful didn't make it.

Good show, good atmosphere as ever.

(Plus the early morning atmospheric photos of York in snow and mist)

clifblkskull05 Feb 2012 11:34 a.m. PST

Any pics Lads?
Thanks,Clif

Phil Gray05 Feb 2012 1:29 p.m. PST

nice show, good trader turnout, decent visitor count too i think… was amazed to see that I wasn't the only cyclist on site…

CutterYork05 Feb 2012 2:11 p.m. PST

Re the continued reiteration of the car crime central comments. York is not a car crime hotspot. The show gets many visitors, 920 this year despite the snow, and 1500 ish a year for 2010 and 2011. As the organiser for the traders and the lead organiser for the show if there was a big car crime issue we would have heard about it person rather than via a forum. Yes people can have car windows broken but that can happen outside their own house. Yes car parking can be an issue but the racecourse has invested thousands in improving the official carpark. Most often the problems occur when people park on the patch of ground between the proper carpark and the venue.

This year snow caused the major problem but people coped well. In all we had over 1000 people in the venue including the competition goers and the buzz was very good. Thanks to all that made the effort.

It was busy enough, looked like a good turn out. I was happily parted with my hobby cash.No problem with the snow , i just left a little earlier to make my way through from the N York moors – be prepared thats all as with any winter driving.

I saw no problem with "car crime" and would consider York as a problem area for that – it just happnes.

Thanks to guys who helped push me into my parking spot , right outside the main entrance – cheers

Sane Max06 Feb 2012 2:58 a.m. PST

I had a good time, may have seen two empty tables for no shows, but I rather liked that it was slightly quieter than last year – it was nice being able to get to the tables.

I spent about £100.00 GBP, less than normal but that is becasue I had placed ny usual show order for Peter Pig online too late to collect.

"York, Crime Hot-spot. Yeah, right."
