"… it was the second largest battle of the 19th Century where almost half a million men fought in a sprawling battle that decided the outcome of the war in a single day. This was a battle that dwarfed any fought in the recently ended Civil War in America and where the myth was born that all future wars would be quickly settled: a myth that was reinforced in 1871 but which was so painfully shattered in 1914."
There is a tour for that interesting battlefield.

Very interesting. I would love to see that at one of teh conventions I attend. But I'm not sure I would want to spend the money to put on the game myself!

The pictures were great, Margard.

"By the way, anybody had wargame that big battle?"

Yes, a couple of years ago, sadly I didn't take any photos of the game.

6mm. The Austrians lost:) (but the Saxons did rather well).

To represent the indecision of the Austrians, their forces were largely immobilised until Benedeck manged to ride from Koeniggratz and establish his CP at Chulm. Historically he arrived he just in time to see his right wing deciding to attack the Prussians of their own accord. In the game, poor old Benedeck got stuck in in endless tarffic jams on his way to the front, but arrived at Chulm just in time to order the right wing to attack the Prussians in the woods south of Masloved because it looked like a sensible thing to do. Then the Prussian 2nd Army rolled up in their right rear. Oh dear…

Come to the show to see my 15mm figures live in an 1866 Black Powder game.

I did Konnigratz for Wargames Journal about five years ago playing the game on Neil Fawcett's snooker table. It only took the whole weekend to complete! Used Volley and Bayonet for that game.

Solferino 1859 … different war, but not too different link

"1859 and 1866 periods covered here with Ian Kay's Irregular Miniatures. These fought Prussians, Italians and French so are a pretty flexible Army if you ever wanted to invest in one, just like their Napoleonic ancestors."

They did, but not in the same uniform. 1866 armies are suitable for vexing the Danes in 1864, however

Royal Marine02 Feb 2012 5:56 a.m. PST

I'm not a stickler for uniforms in wargames so decided to drop the greatcoats for 1866 just so I could use them in 1859 and 1866. Haven't done anything with the Danes in 1864 yet though … one day.

Many Austrians were still in white Kittel in 1866. Accounts of Koniggratz mention Austrians in white. Probably most accurate look would be to field Austrians in both grey overcoats and white kittels….but might as well game with what you got!

A number of Austrians died of heatstroke in Italy in their greatcoats, so if you are a better general than the historic one you could justify letting your toys wear tunics!

2nd largest battle? Which was the first?

Jeroen7203 Feb 2012 3:22 p.m. PST

Ah … so the Austrians can wear their White jackets when the sun is shining. Therefore this makes me a genius general – I will never lose a game again!!

Just received this book from Amazon link
A quick look through this hardback signed copy gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Lots of detail, maps of the main battles, detailed ORBATS … what's not to love?
