Just painted a sample trooper to see how it looks – more pics on blog. I'm quite pleased with the results!

The hair and lobster tail seem to be at odds with each other.

Big Red01 Feb 2012 1:39 p.m. PST

Lovely shading and highlighting.

You should be. The horse is excellent!

How is the horse excellent?! It looks weird.

Looks like a wargames horse to me. Brwon, 4 legs, guy on the top waving a sword. Seems fine. Bet no-one playing with that figure would be confused.

Olddorg, your model looks extremely good. I give anyone credit for having the guts to post photos of their work online. I simply don't have the guts to do so, even though I think my paint jobs are very good, however when I photograph them, they somehow do not come out quite right (maybe the camera, yeah, that's it.) So I bet this figure looks even more astonishing in person, sort of speak.

Olddorg;

Excellent job of assembly, painting and photography! One minor "quibble" if you will, given all of the options in the Warlord kits, when you use a sword arm you should really clip or file the hilt away from the scabbard by his side. Just as if you had used a pistol arm, you should then clip away one of the pistol grips from a holster. A very minor point admittedly, and it does not detract from the quality of the overall job, just would have enhanced the accuracy of the figure.

Very impressive painting. I really like the horse too.

Stuart MM05 Feb 2012 2:47 p.m. PST

Decent paint job and a good marriage of a brown palette.

Its actually a Hollywood/Victorian myth that only Parliamentarian Roundheads wore lobster tails (with the Royalist all prancing around camply with long hair and floppy hats) – they (along with the various other similar helmets) were(if one could get a helmet in the first place) the headgear of choice in combat for any cavalry trooper – of course people would have softer/more comfortable headgear to wear on the march and some wore steel skullcaps, but if someone on whatever side could get a helmet he'd wear it (after all if people are waving swords around would you prefer a Montero/brimmed hat or something that might at least give some protection)

from looking and looking at the picture and the quite light shading /highlighting (it's not at cartoon level at all) I really can't understand the above comment

Thats a great figure!

I suspect 10th Foot means the size of the withers through the shoulder compared to the croup and flank rather than the painting.
I think the angle exacerbates the difference and we tend to judge horses by modern breeds we see around us. Look online and you'll see all sorts around in fact, but we don't see the variety of shapes in everday life that existed when horse power was ubiquitous.

At least I'm guessing that's what he meant- 'cos I think the painting is very good indeed. Lovely work Olddorg

maybe – Olddorg was after all showing us his painting since he didn't make the model (similar the comment re the lobster and hair which actually only shows that the poster has limted ECW knowledge in implying that no-one with long hair wore a lobster)

Very nicely done, that. I've resisted the ECW/TYW period in the past, but it's posts like this that re – stoke my interest.

Meanwhile, the patina of dust on my copy of Warhammer ECW continues to thicken…

Well, there are some oddities in the dimensions of the Warlord cavalrymen.

picture

My first impression was that this horseman is either too small, or the horse is too big. Eventually I settled for him to be a wee scotsman, of course!

Yes – personally i'm none too keen on any of the WL cavalry – Scots troopers should really be on quite poor quality nags. The Bicorne lancers are actually far nicer (though again the horses are maybe too high quality for such)
