Noticed something odd. Of all the games I've seen about the Viking age the majority seem about Viking going into battle with Saxons, Normans, Moors etc, usually played with Warhammer Ancients. Why no love for skirmishes and raiding ? Or is it just a lack of imagination ? |

Or are you just not going to the blogs of the guys who like skirmishes? |

Yes, I'd say Saga is a recent but significant example of the other style of game. |

There is quite a bit of skirmish gaming out there. The local convention this year is scheduled to have three Viking games, two using Saga, and one I'll be putting on using PigWars. My game involves two sides of about 60 men each fighting over a whale that washed ashore (aka lunch). No big refights of Stamford Bridge or Seige of Paris, though. Grelber |

Odd, other than tournament games, most of the viking games I've seen are raids and skirmishes. |

2 Words – Pig Wars! I love skirmish gaming with Vikings: link It also lends itself to a little fantasy stuff from time to time. Lost Pict |

If the combat system you use is single basing oriented, and the results are rolled for individually, i.e. "man to man", then even if the scale is representative of hundreds/thousands, it still looks and feels like a skirmish game. People have this odd perception: that small battles/skirmishes somehow dispensed with formal tactics; that smaller numbers means that the warriors loosened up and fought man to man with a lot of "fightin' room" in between them. There is no evidence whatsoever for this. A "battle" of say 20 to 30 men per side would still form up close, protect their flanks as best as possible, position themselves with a terrain advantage where possible, etc. The only scenario where this would not be the case would be in a settlement that is being pillaged; where individual Vikings or very small groups of them split up to seize the loot, and per force meet the owners, perhaps in brief combats

Odd, all I've seen are skirmish gaming as far as Vikings are concerned. There are plenty of good choices out there for Viking skirmish gaming whether it's Strandhogg, Pig Wars, Battle Troll, Saga, Age of Blood. Did I say Strandhogg? |
