Does your boss know that you're a wargamer?

* yes
* no
* I don't know
* I hope not
* I don't have a boss
* I am the boss

Only Warlock30 Jan 2012 3:26 p.m. PST

Yes. (I am my Boss. Unless you ask my wife. She knows too, though. or at least suspects.)

Mooseworks830 Jan 2012 3:29 p.m. PST

No

Connard Sage30 Jan 2012 3:31 p.m. PST

I don't know. Probably not.

Why would he be bothered either way?

Tom Reed30 Jan 2012 3:33 p.m. PST

Yes she does.

DeanMoto30 Jan 2012 3:37 p.m. PST

As Connard Sage said. He and both know we like guns, though. He likes showing me his AR-15, pistols and Mossberg 500 Tac Shotgun! Dean

Yes. And she even approves my spending habits. Mostly. grin

000 Triple Aught30 Jan 2012 3:40 p.m. PST

No.

Personal logo ColCampbell Supporting Member of TMP30 Jan 2012 3:44 p.m. PST

Yes. And my wife does also. In fact she tolerates it because it keeps my off the streets, out of the bars, and away from "loose wimmen!"

Why would he be bothered either way?

Depends on where you work, and the boss.

Connard Sage30 Jan 2012 3:55 p.m. PST

Depends on where you work, and the boss.

I can see a possible conflict of interest if one worked for, say, an anti-war group. Otherwise what possible interest is it to my superiors if I play with toy soldiers as long as I don't do it at work?

My riding motorbikes may be a source of concern (LTIs), but wargaming?

KeithJohnson30 Jan 2012 3:56 p.m. PST

yes

TodCreasey30 Jan 2012 4:18 p.m. PST

No. Never came up.

peru52200030 Jan 2012 4:31 p.m. PST

Pretty sure she knows, but I don't really talk about it at work much.

Waco Joe30 Jan 2012 4:34 p.m. PST

Old one did, new one I have not gotten to know that well yet.

Jovian130 Jan 2012 4:36 p.m. PST

Yes, given that I have a wargaming related poster which is about 3' x 5' on my office wall. grin

Martian Root Canal30 Jan 2012 4:47 p.m. PST

Which boss?

DalyDR30 Jan 2012 4:48 p.m. PST

Yep.

Yes, but I do it for a living.

rampantlion30 Jan 2012 4:58 p.m. PST

Yes, I even took some figs to work one day to show people…and some have never looked at me the same way since. I where my gaming geekdom as a badge of honor!

Yeah, it came up at the interview.

Connard Sage30 Jan 2012 5:11 p.m. PST

"Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of a wargaming group?"

charliemike30 Jan 2012 5:14 p.m. PST

Both of my bosses know I'm a wargamer: my wife and the owner of the company where I work.

In the last part of my curriculum there are few information about my hobbies and interests and during the interview to decide if to give me the job the boss asked about wargaming and thought that was an interesting hobby revealing the ability to learn even at an age of almost 50 (as a lot of people stop learning before 30).

Right now as a side job I act as a consultant for a fair on gaming that he's trying to re-launch.

With wifey it was easier, she finds my geekiness amusing and she thinks my little lead dolls are cute.

JRacel30 Jan 2012 5:24 p.m. PST

My boss and my coworkers know of my hobby. Not an issue with any of them since everyone has their own thing they like to do.

Jeff

ming3130 Jan 2012 5:29 p.m. PST

yes he has to give me time off for conventions

Yesthatphil30 Jan 2012 5:34 p.m. PST

All of my previous employers have known (and at least pretended some interest … ) – now I am my own boss.

jpattern230 Jan 2012 5:47 p.m. PST

Yes.

"Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of a wargaming group?"

Something like that.

brass130 Jan 2012 6:06 p.m. PST

In as much as I have a boss (I do volunteer work for the National Park Service): yes. In fact, I have already put on one demo/public participation War of 1812 game at the Chalmette Battlefield unit of Jean Lafitte National Park and have them pretty much sold on letting me do more as the bicentennial progresses.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut30 Jan 2012 6:25 p.m. PST

My previous boss was one of my gaming buddies before he hired me. We regularly gamed on lunch breaks. Everyone I work with knows.

SgtPain30 Jan 2012 6:35 p.m. PST

I would be very surprised if they did, I don't talk about religion, politics, guns, or wargaming with my boss, co-workers, or customers. If asked about my interests I talk about Golf, football and my interest in American history.

Since relationships and teamwork, are key to my job, there is no upside for me to talk about any of my personal interests, that some people my find controversy or silly.

richarDISNEY30 Jan 2012 6:40 p.m. PST

My old bosses --- yes.
My new boss --- heck no. She wouldn't understand.
beer

combatpainter Fezian30 Jan 2012 6:51 p.m. PST

Yes but they downplay it and call me a military modeller.

PzGeneral30 Jan 2012 7:13 p.m. PST

Yes.

Every year I go to a "Geekfest"

21eRegt30 Jan 2012 7:19 p.m. PST

Absolutely and so do my students and fellow teachers.

rusty musket30 Jan 2012 7:22 p.m. PST

No, my boss knows I reenact but he does not know about wargaming (which I have not really done in 10 years). He knows nothing of my soldiers. He would not care, though, I am sure.

mad monkey 130 Jan 2012 7:26 p.m. PST

Yes.

Scale Creep Miniatures30 Jan 2012 7:30 p.m. PST

I hope not.

wrgmr130 Jan 2012 7:59 p.m. PST

I am the boss.

My lady paints bases and horses for me.

Grelber30 Jan 2012 8:32 p.m. PST

No.
None of his business. The boss about 15 years ago did, because the newspaper ran an article on the group the first day I came, so I didn't know to avoid it.

I'm not sure my boss is real.

I've only ever had emails from him (her?) & sometimes a memo with a facsimile signature.

He (she?) could be entirely made-up.

Jemima Fawr30 Jan 2012 11:46 p.m. PST

He should do. I do all my painting in work.

Buff Orpington31 Jan 2012 2:58 a.m. PST

Well, he could do as I had the WI year planner up on my wall last year. This year I don't have a wall and he'll get tetchy if I put a year planner over the window.

ochoin deach31 Jan 2012 3:21 a.m. PST

This year I don't have a wall

The recession has bitten hard.

ochoin deach31 Jan 2012 3:24 a.m. PST

I found this photo of my boss in the in-house journal:

Evidently the banks are hiring homunculi

TamsinP31 Jan 2012 3:29 a.m. PST

Yes, he does. I'm not sure how far up the line of management knowledge of my wargaming goes.

53Punisher31 Jan 2012 3:57 a.m. PST

No, and that miserable pr*** doesn't need to either.
