I recently picked this set up and have been looking for painted examples. I have found information for just about everything except for one oddball thing. The set the includes a figure which looks to be a messenger reporting in…wearing a Horo. I understood that the Takeda troops in this role wore a Sashimono with a centipede depicted.

So, that being said, anyone have an idea as to how to paint the Horo to represent a staunchly Takeda allied clan? I've found several designs for Tokugawa allied clans but, I'd really like to use this guy on my Takeda commander base and my google fu has failed me.

The Takeda Tsukaiban did wear sashimono with a centipede.

Films and Taiga dramas often depict the Takeda Tsukaiban as wearing uniformed size and designed sashimono. This may NOT be the case.

Ritta Nakanishi describes the Takeda Tsukaiban as wearing different colored sashimono with the centipede illustrated in different ways. They came in different colors of black on white, black on red, white on red, white on black and gold on black. The centipede were drawn in a spiral, or an 's', shaped like an inverted 'L' or straight, facing up or facing down. The centipede sashimono also came in different sizes, that they were a matter of the individual's preference.

Some Takeda Tsukaiban also wore horo. RED the color of the Takeda Tsukaiban horo. Some Tsukaiban wore a combination of horo AND sashimono.

Takeda Tsukaiban Kawanishi Shinano wore a red horo, with a small white sashimono on top (33.3 cm by 15.2 cm). The centipede is drawn vertically straight, head facing the top, drawn outlined in black on white sashimono.

The horo is worn by others in Takeda Shingen's hatamoto. His brother Takeda Nobushige wore a dark blue horo with inscriptions written vertically in white. A bodyguard wore a red horo with a golden fan on top of the sashimono pole. Another bodyguard wore a black(?) horo with what appears to be three golden feathers on top of the sashimono pole.

Try Warflag for examples of Takeda banners and sahimono.

Thanks Evalario, it is nice to have that information. Thanks also for all the great illustrations and information on the samurai archives. I should point out that I have looked there and on Warflag BEFORE asking my question. Those are great resources but they did not have what I needed.

Hi Sir Samuel,

I haven't posted illustrations of the majority of Takeda banners at the Samurai Archives as I am currently illustrating them for a book intended as a painting guide for artists and modellers, heraldry collected in 25 years of sculpting and painting samurai. I've attempted to illustrate the heraldry sets for each of the Takeda contingents as complete as possible, like the sets on the Samurai Archives. Some of the Takeda flags will show earlier versions and some progression to the final version we know today, as seen on the Sanada on page 1.

The Takeda Tsukaiban has been a source of much frustration and inspiration. They have their own chapter with battlefield illustrations showing them in action.

EValerio: that sounds like a very cool project, I love the stuff you have put up online. How could I best keep an eye out for it when it is released?

Sir Samuel Vimes09 Feb 2012 7:31 p.m. PST

Oh my. Please put me down for a copy. That sounds fantastic.

EValerio09 Feb 2012 9:08 p.m. PST

Setsuko, Sir Samuel,

I will let TMP know when it is finished. It will be awhile as it includes friends and foes of the Takeda. The Imagawa, the Hojo, Shinano warlords. Almost a third of the book is Shingen's nemesis Uesugi Kenshin and his generals, Kenshin's neighbors both friends and foes.

In the meantime there are other heraldry discussions going on. I'll help if I can:
