I am about to start work on some 16th century Stradiots and I want to do a flag that can be used for most sides (Italian States, French or Imperialist). Basically a standard for the mercenary company rather than one for the side they are fighting for.

I would also be interested in any evidence of shield designs, although to be honest I will probably keep them plain as I hate painting shields

Does any one know any sources for flags they may have carried? I have seen simple striped flags but can't find any contemporary sources

Thought they were a pretty eclectic bunch? Shield designs can be kept simple. Maybe simple two color? Go with simple one color spear pennants?
The only color plate I remember off-hand of Stradioti would be in the Osprey Fornovo book -dismounted rummaging through Francis' porn.
I would check manufacturer websites – perhaps Mirliton.
Could also ask Lorenzo et al at the Impetus website?

For a generic flag: a cross.
