Hi. I picked up a set of Battlefront WWII with the modern information fromn F&F's website. Gave them a read, and liked them, but my gaming group is not so excited about them. I like their scale. Can all you folks out in TMP land give me your thoughts on this system? Good? Bad? Both?
Do you use them with your own modifications? Thanks!

As a set of rules to put toys on the table and move them around and toss dice, sure, why not? They're fun. But there are better rules out there for modern games that give you a better feel for the period.

Pan,

As I recall, they started life as a modern set---called First Echelon, I think, when Greg Lyle and Jim Baker were running some games. So should work.

Tgunner-
Where do you believe the set "lets you down"? And what set/sets do you like? I'm thinking in terms of an infantry stand equaling a fire team or squad. So the abstractions of CWD or MSH don't do it for me. On the other hand, skirmish is too small. I know, a tall order. :)

Played them a few times . I think they are very good . Doesn't handle the bigger game too well , due to the amount of detail . Best for a few platoons only .

Dwight, I think you're thinking of Battleground WW2? 'A few platoons' in Battlefront: WW2 is only 9 bases or so.

Re 'Battlefront: Modern', it's still only a work in progress and needs an awful lot of work – particularly in hi-tech warfare such as WW3 on the North German Plain in the 1980s. It works perfectly well for earlier 'Modern' conflicts, though.

I haven't been able to devote much time to the project lately and Mark Hayes' death dealt it a considerable blow, as he was my main sounding board.

Cold War Commander does everything you're after. And it's a dedicated modern set so no messing about required.

Agent-
I've thought of CWC as a "large" scale set for stand=platoon, but have read it can be reduced in scale to stand=squad. Do you have any experience with it at the smaller scale?

RMark-
That's OK, since I'll be using it for '73 AIW. Any advice on how to get a gaming group over their suspicion of the rules?
thanks!
