Did kill rings on German tanks and tank-destroyers work like kill markings for fighters and move with the pilot, or like the kill markings of a ship and stay with the ship – regardless of who is the officer commanding?

For example when Otto Carius changed from Tigers to Jagdtigers, did his kill rings move the the Jagdtiger?

Given the disposability and interchangability of vehicles, I would think they would go with the commander. That's a guess, though.

They went with the commander of the vehicle. Wittman had several different vehicles and his kill rings moved with him and his crew from tank to tank. There are many other documented examples as well. Although later in the war, many tank crews did not mark their tank with the kill rings.

Thanks, that's what I assumed, but you know the saying about assumptions…

I have seen a photo with a dedication to a KIA stug crew, myself I think the kill rings stayed with that vehicle. A bit like a lucky charm.

But I also think Jovian is right if your in the news they went with you….
