I have seen several photographs of Shermans in the Arakan but I can't work out what mark they are.

They look like M4A4s which is what I would expect but some look like M4A2's which I didn't think were usd by the British / Indian army?

Any one know?

Dont forget, in Burma the equipment was US and could differ, hence Lee turrets rather than Grants.

But dont listen to me… Shermans confuse the hell outta me!

IIRC 19th Lancers used mainly Sherman IIIs (ie. M4A2) with other regiments being mainly Sherman V and the very odd Sherman I.

The vast majority of Shermans in Burma were Sherman V (M4 A4), including those of 19th Lancers (sorry Dom), though the odd Sherman III (M4A2) does crop up. Sherman III DD were also used by 25th Lancers very late in the war. I've not seen any Sherman I out there. Some Sherman II were delivered to India for evaluation, but were not used operationally.

Thanks chaps,

I thought they'd be M4A4's but the angle of the frontal armour looked a bit odd, so I guess they might have been M4A2's. I'll stick with Sherman MkV's to keep things simple.

Thanks for the pdf link – very, very useful stuff!
