Hi all.

Bored at work and wondering if anyone can give me an idea for a "good" set of rules for WSS or 7YW (not sure which yet) that has very large battalions? Say 36-48 figs or so.

You see, I have an idea for a new project. In the past my group have always played sets that have small 8-12 figure battalions (1/60 scale), figuring you get more 'manoeuvre elements" for you buck and therefore get a more interesting game with less miniatures and space.

Screw that (for once). Time for something new – prompted in part because I think a 36-48 strong unit of 7YW Hanovarian grenadiers would look damn amazing!!

Any thoughts on your favourite set that has large units? Note: I am not in the least bit bothered by complexity – as long as they are good they can be as complex as you like….

Thanks very much in advance for any help.

Incidentally, if you have time to comment, what is it about these rules that you like?

Second vote for BAR. The simple answer is why I like them is that they work and give a good game especially with large units. They are not complex. Have a look at DAf's website for his reports on the big games he runs.

And a prize to DAF for the first use of the new emoticon…

Which, interestingly enough, is not huckleberry shaped.

I like the rules. I love the pagentry of the big units, and certainly find it in BAR. Big actions can be resolved in an afternoons game, with sweeping movement and dramatic fire exchanges. Reserve is important. In BAR, you have a battle and you break some eggs ;^)

I also use BAR for my SYW-era games. It is flexible enough that you can use it with 24-figure batatlions (two 12-figure "divisions") while you are growing your 48- to 60-figure battalions.

Awesome. Thanks very much guys, I'll pick up a copy once I get this project off the ground. God knows when… but it's certainly in my future I think.

Just goes to show, it doesn't matter how many years you're in this hobby there's alwasy somethuing new to learn. I had never even heard of BAR!

Have a look at old favourite "Charge!" too whilst "The Wargame" stll has a following. There are similarities between the two but in general Charge is simpler with limited morale mechanics. The Wargame has been apearing in Brigadier Grant's books in the Wargaming in history series.

I believe one can use Blackpowder with units as large as you wish, tho not my cup of tea.

I should check out a few big battalion blogs before taking the plunge, Der Alte Fritz is probably the place to start.
