Reading this thread TMP link about the hate mail that Bill gets about how the site is run got me thinking about what's the real draw here. Is it mostly Bill? The news, the features, the editorial policy, etc. Or is it the community, the posters and contributers?

I believe its a mix of course but what would you say is the importance ratio? For example, Bill:10% Members 90%. Some people clearly think Bills policies are enough to make them leave, implying that user contributions amount to zilch. What's the score for you?

rusty musket26 Jan 2012 7:49 p.m. PST

I think it is a nice place to get military historical information and miniatures information and advice. It is easy to use, for the most part. Bill makes it the way it is, so he is a big part of why I like it, I suppose.

Breadth of knowledge and the willingness toshare it.
It's the site with the biggest membership and it, naturally, leaves all others behind in this crucial quality.

21eRegt26 Jan 2012 8:01 p.m. PST

I come for the news and chance to ask questions, or be enlightened by answers to the questions of others (85%). To be amused by genuine humor (10%). To "poke the bear" by defending (with the truth) rules, miniatures or POVs not currently in fashion (2%). To feel superior to some of the fools who insist on deserving my derision. The difference between me and them is that I keep my opinion to myself (1%). All other reasons combined (2%). So I guess it is virtually all about the membership.

You may say I don't have life but when I come home from work I kiss my daughter and my wife, kick my dog ; next thing I do is to turn on my laptop to check TMP.The place is my pub.The pub is bigger than life.No ego should think it is bigger than this pub.

Jovian126 Jan 2012 8:57 p.m. PST

it's all of you crazy gits. I enjoy the articles and everything – complainers just need to hate on something – they paint a target on Bill and off they go. Sorry, but you read the rules and follow them – things go swimmingly well.

Wolfprophet26 Jan 2012 8:57 p.m. PST

News. Community. You guys are all pretty damn fun to talk to. Even the ones with opinions extremely differing from my own. :)

galvinm26 Jan 2012 9:01 p.m. PST

Y'all!

Sundance26 Jan 2012 9:05 p.m. PST

The information, camaraderie and humor.

Rogzombie Fezian26 Jan 2012 9:13 p.m. PST

Bill's a great guy, grow the hell up!

BTW I come for the ads too!

JRacel26 Jan 2012 9:13 p.m. PST

Community and News as long as we can avoid the asinine drama that tends to turn up occasionally.

I'm not sure what I would do without it anymore since it serves as my lifeline when work, family and life in general have me down.

Ratbone26 Jan 2012 9:18 p.m. PST

I love the total package. I am greatly pleased by Bill's efforts to moderate. Knowing that the true idiots that would otherwise frustrate me will not be tolerated makes it worth my time. I've given up on other sites over the years.

In real life, laws fault on the side of the accused party, but in the world of the internet where everyone is a hidden hero, I prefer what others claim is trampling on their rights.

HammerHead26 Jan 2012 10:59 p.m. PST

Its easy to use i do belong to other forums this is so user friendly. Humour seem to be an extra on other sites. In every club you always get people who think they know better but rarely put forward any real good ideas.

Jakse37526 Jan 2012 11:29 p.m. PST

it's the only forum that works on my old and slow work computer. Actually what got me hooked was when I became a supporting member by someone's donation. Murphy's work stories were great, and hopefully returning soon. have re-upped since then and will continue to do so. Too much good stuff going on here.

Bill? seriously? apart for the OP who the Bleeped text comes here for Bill? No offence, he is a nice bloke and all, but really? Maybe you should just friend him on Myspace or whatever.

- Conversation with other Wargamers 30%
- Questions on stuff others will know better than me 50%
- To show off my Smart Mouth 10%

I come here mainly for the discussion boards.

I've turned off the marketplace and usually ignore the news.

Russell12012027 Jan 2012 3:15 a.m. PST

Military historical information. Occassional specific searches for product.

CPT Jake27 Jan 2012 3:20 a.m. PST

The 'Needs more boobies'.

Patrick R27 Jan 2012 4:06 a.m. PST

The secret police officer with a gun pointed at me told me to write that it was the atmosphere of comradeship, the free exchange of ideas and the celebration of the glorious revolution and our great leader.

Personally, I come for the complementary peanuts and the odd Zardoz.

bobblanchett27 Jan 2012 4:12 a.m. PST

its certainly not the extensive thread and forum subscription/notification system

zippyfusenet27 Jan 2012 5:44 a.m. PST

The chance to chat with fellow hobbyists about our mutual interests is what brings me daily to TMP.

No one I work with has any interest in military history, modelling or wargaming. No one in my family does. There are a few cronies I know face-to-face in real life, and then there's the internet. And this is the most jumpin' site I know of on the net.

Cigarettes, whiskey and wild, wild, women…

history, hints/techniques, helpful info, figure and rule discussion, product information.

Mooseworks827 Jan 2012 6:36 a.m. PST

One of the best, if not the best, miniature hobby e-zines.

Tuudawgs27 Jan 2012 6:46 a.m. PST

News, ideas, inspiration, and reassurance I'm not the only one who "Plays with little toy soldiers"

recon3527 Jan 2012 7:31 a.m. PST

All of the above, and I usually end up finding a few posts on topics that are interesting, but if I hadn't seen them here, I wouldn't have gone looking for them. The knowledge of this memberbase and varied life experiences is really quite amazing when you consider what initially brought us all here – toy soldiers

Connard Sage27 Jan 2012 7:50 a.m. PST

I only come here to take the Bleeped text of John the OFM.

Valator27 Jan 2012 8:32 a.m. PST

40% sex, 40% violence, 10% nerd stench, 9% casual disdain, and 1% wargaming.

That's what keeps bringing me back: wargaming.

Community for me. Includes information, discussion, and energy!

haywire27 Jan 2012 8:51 a.m. PST

Mostly I come here because this is a website that is NOT dedicated to any one game system. By this I mean every other post is not about GW or FOW or PP, it is surprisingly less than most other websites.

I find the community here to be MORE about different game systems instead of the "Common Three" and I am more able to find someone here who plays different games instead of feeling out of the group for not playing the "Common Three".

For Zardoz.

Altius27 Jan 2012 10:22 a.m. PST

Worth?

News and research (Who makes this, how do you paint that, etc, etc.). Everything else is superfluous, as far as I'm concerned.

CeruLucifus27 Jan 2012 10:43 a.m. PST

It's a vendor-neutral miniatures gaming site with a large active community. So there's always something to read, and the biases are unfiltered.

Gosh, lots of things. The entertainment of the people, the knowledge, the product releases, forums for questions, reviews, etc…

I am totally hooked, to the detriment of my painting sometimes.
