Is there a game or games that dispite all reason you still really enjoy even if its been gone for years.

Here is mine: Shadowrun Heroclix which used large action figures with a simplified heroclix rule system.

This is one of my pet peeves. Why should I care if a game is unpopular or "failed"? By whose standards? If
I like it, it is not a failure.

And what is this "support" business? Play or not play. There is no "support".

Connard Sage26 Jan 2012 12:25 p.m. PST

I agree with the OFM.

epturner26 Jan 2012 12:27 p.m. PST

I agree with Connard who agrees with the OFM.

Starfleet Battle Manual by Lou Zocchi

Epic Space Marines (the old version from the big blue box)

And I just painted up and started playing Galactic Grenadiers from Ral Partha (ca 1980)!

Plynkes26 Jan 2012 12:28 p.m. PST

"If I like it, it is not a failure."

That ego of yours is just out of control, John. :)

"Well, we only sold one copy… to some guy in Pennsylvania. Never mind that we don't have enough money to feed the kids and we're going to lose the house, at least we can say we haven't failed."

RavenscraftCybernetics26 Jan 2012 12:29 p.m. PST

what epturner said.

richarDISNEY26 Jan 2012 12:29 p.m. PST

I think he is getting at games that are no longer made but you still like to play.

Me?
Space Crusade
Heroquest
Chainsaw Warrior
FASA's Shadowrun (1st ed)
Chill
Sandman
Time Master

To name a few…

Ironwolf26 Jan 2012 12:51 p.m. PST

The old Highlander card game. Its the only card game I invested in and a couple times a year we still drag out our decks and play.

Jeff Ewing26 Jan 2012 12:52 p.m. PST

Does Crimson Skies count as "failed"? It's no longer manufactured or supported by FASA or WotC.

GoneNow26 Jan 2012 12:56 p.m. PST

Starship Troopers
Though there are several others, this one is still near the top of my list of "go to" games.

Greg B26 Jan 2012 1:16 p.m. PST

Find "support" can actually matter to some of us, as it is nice to have new models/figs/material/new players appear every so often, and that is much more likely when game systems are supported.

CmdrKiley26 Jan 2012 1:27 p.m. PST

I have been described by my group as the Patron Saint of Dead Games.

I still play from time to time Warzone Ultimate Editions, Void 1.1, Starship Troopers, Vor the Maelstrom.

I should say that I pretty much have most of everything I need to play these games, so dead or unsupported is pretty irrelevant to me.

Yesthatphil26 Jan 2012 1:28 p.m. PST

I still play Armati which continues to be played by the discerning band of enthusiasts that like that approach to ancient battle.

But I agree with the dissenters. The most up-to-date, best and fully-supported version is the one you decide it is.

CmdrKiley and I obviously have similar tastes..

Warzone Ultimate Edition, Vor the Maelstrom (and converted armies from Void and 40k), Space Hulk 1st Edition, Epic Space Marine/Titan Legions, and I'd Play Napoleon's Battles (green box) in a heartbeat if given the chance.

Willtij26 Jan 2012 1:46 p.m. PST

Yes, richarDisney said it better than I: Games no longer made but you still like to play. Sheesh!

I have a huge collection of the old LOTR Combat Hex clix game…. but I haven't played it in a while.

It was a great game but no one else wants to play it anymore.

richarDISNEY26 Jan 2012 2:26 p.m. PST

Yea Jeff Ewing… Crimson Skies is still a great game!

Empire

WRG 6
Red Baron

dBerczerk26 Jan 2012 2:45 p.m. PST

Games Workshop's "Man o' War" naval game with its "Sea of Blood" and "Plague Fleet" supplements.

Great looking models that paint up nicely. Simple game mechanics that are easy to learn, but still give an intense, unpredictable game.

waaslandwarrior26 Jan 2012 2:53 p.m. PST

Yes, Man o' War was a great game, though it's been a while since we played (2 years I think?)

Armati II is a game we still play every other month.

Mooseworks826 Jan 2012 2:53 p.m. PST

HeroQuest
AD&D Battlesystem Skirmishes

Aside from that I agree with Eric whom agrees with Connard who agrees with the OFM.

1st edition AD&D.
Lots of Avalon Hill and SPI boardgame classics.

I don't know if these count as failed or unpopular just because they're out of print or superseded by revised editions.

Caesar26 Jan 2012 3:05 p.m. PST

I agree with the words that OFM used.

I still play the WizKids Shadowrun duel game, though I wouldn't say it was a "simplified Heroclix" game. But only a couple of times a year anymore.

The big discontinued game that I love is Mongoose's Gangs of Mega City One. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it "failed" for two reasons: It was a Judge Dredd game … and … It wasn't a Judge Dredd game. That is, using the 2000AD Judge Dredd property as a setting practically guaranteed that only Dredd fans would pick it up. The game itself didn't focus on Dredd – it was … is a very nice urban gang warfare game (with scifi and four color elements which are not essential to play), which probably left a lot of those who picked it up disappointed. To their credit, they didn't call it the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game", they called it "Gangs of Mega City One".

I also still play D&D. The original. If you need all that other material to make the game interesting, you skill as a DM or Player [expletive deleted]ing [expletive deleted]s [expletive deleted] from a [expletive deleted]ing [expletive deleted].

…OK, I have been known to play 1st edition AD&D…

I think it's legal to agree with the OFM again

Operation Warboard, Warhammer version 1.0, Terry Wise's Ancient and Renaissance Rules, Fantasy Warlord, WRG various and DBA (is that really old-school now? Makes me feel ancient!), D&D Basic Edition, Retinue, File Leader, Whipping Bobby Lee, etcetera

Probably more golden oldies than 'current' rule sets.

Madzerker26 Jan 2012 5:25 p.m. PST

I still love man o war and warzone.

Dynaman878926 Jan 2012 5:36 p.m. PST

I still like to use the 3rd edition of Command Decision (don't much care for the 4th edition) and the old TSR classic Panzer Warfare (did I just date myself?).

Wolfprophet26 Jan 2012 6:45 p.m. PST

That said.

Starship Troopers. My workspace still looks like a bugnest.

One of my favorite games is "Pig Tickler"

Just in case it isn't, I agree with Connard and the guy he agrees with.

TwoGunBob26 Jan 2012 11:25 p.m. PST

Warzone for certain. I was lamenting just recently about missing being able to just impulse buy into an army rather than doing the ebay tango looking for figures at a reasonable price i.e. no RARE!!!!!!! Out of Print!!!!!!! Pro-painted long lost 40K figure!!! etc. and Prince August doesn't have the most agreeable inventory.

WKeyser27 Jan 2012 12:25 a.m. PST

Clan war great fantasy game ok to very good figures.
Confrontation 3 very good fantasy skirmish game, unbelievably great figures for most of the races portrayed.

It always surprises the hell out of me when a fantasy company stops producing or drops a game and the people who have been gaming it drop the figures on ebay and other places dirt cheap, great way to get great figures at a very very reasonable price. When Clan war was dropped I was picking up figures for 25c a fig on average on ebay. The same happened to Confrontation, although the prices now seem to have gone thru the roof.

William

TwoGunBob27 Jan 2012 2:43 a.m. PST

Seems Clan War prices on ebay are in line with what Valiant currently charges. Course I haven't found a decent deal on ebay in ages but I'm not actively looking as much these days.

On the basis that support means still buying, painting and converting figures and scenery to use with:
V&B 1st edition
Cell 1999
Sky Galleons of Mars
Space Hulk
Confrontation v3
Confrontation AotR (aka v4)

Shaun Travers27 Jan 2012 4:13 a.m. PST

Take Cover for ww2 – play occasionally, and in the middle of a solo game right now.
Armati II – play it around twice a year FTF, which is more than any other game in the last 10 years.

Martin Rapier27 Jan 2012 4:15 a.m. PST

I neither know nor care whether a game is 'unpopular' or 'failed', I just play what I play, so I guess I sort of agree with John the OFM.

I've no idea how I would even tell if a game is unpopular. Internet chit chat?? Maybe that is the only guide, or maybe it only tells you what is popular with a particular community internet users. There are guys at our club who don't even have email.

Question asked and 2nd post it goes awry……

Caesar27 Jan 2012 8:29 a.m. PST

I don't think it did. It's a valid response, I know way too many people who are fun to play games with but who won't touch any system that isn't "in the shop". I mean, you can have both sides laid out, teach them the rules, provide the terrain and space, refreshments and they will go "nah". I don't understand that and think it is a shame that they feel constrained to limit themselves like that.
So, yeah, a game is never "dead" or "unsupported" just because the company is not churning out loads of new editions or supplements to try to keep you engaged with them, rather than the system. A good, complete system isn't going to go rotten over time and you don't necessarily need to have someone else telling you how to expand and play with your toys. Over time, as you play enough, every group makes its own house rules and additions to fit what they want to do.
Even a game that hasn't been produced for years is not necessarily "dead" as long as people are playing and enjoying it.
Popularity can be a measure of a good game but it is also a matter of marketing, shop involvement and peer involvement. Just because a game is popular doesn't mean it is a right fit for your group. Popularity can be misleading.
