Hello all,
I am looking for any links or books on the Baltic crusades, im interested in information, coats of arms for John the 1st of Sweden.
Seems rich for a good game setting with the some of the new ranges from crusader, curteys and the new fireforge plastics!

The Osprey book is a good starting point – it has nice Anguis McBride pictures as do the books on Medieval Scandinavia. I'm not sure if it has those particular arms but the pic of King Magnus has him with a yellow lion on a blue field, or, in balzonry (I think), azure, or a lion rampant and the book seems to suggest this was standard for Swedish monarchs.

Both the Society of Ancients and the Lance and Longbow Society do booklets on the Baltic Crusades which are worth a read despite being a bit amateurish in terms of presentation. The book by Eric Christiansen is very good although it is quite academic and not a page-turner.

Definitely a fun setting and a nice change of pace from the Crusades to the Holy Land.

Eric Christiansen, "The Northern Crusades," ISBN 0-14-026653-4, covers the subject, but there are only a few lines about John Sverkersson, King of Sweden.

Does anyone have a copy of Osprey MAA The Scandinavian Baltic Crusades 1100-1500 they would want to part with?

King John (Johan)'s coat of arms doesn't seem to be known. His sister used this:

Swedish 13C armies are quite poorly known in general.

A must have, in my opinion, is the Society of Ancients booklet on the crusades, "Wargaming the 13th Century Baltic Crusades. Also, your question as been asked before so be sure and check earlier posting under Baltic Crusades and Teutonic Knights.
