The post office is the bane in my life, like all wargamers I get regular supply of figures ect.

Well I've been waiting for some vikings, two order of vikings infact, one from baccus and one from gripping beast.

Waiting and waiting, waiting and waiting.

SOO finnaly I got a note in my box saying a big package had arrived at the post office, the problem is that the post office close at 3 on saturday, so I ran and ran, as the office was closing in 10 minutes, I got there right in time, before they locked the doors, waited 15 minutes in line, showed them my note, and they said:

Sorry, this package hasn't arrived yet.

FFFFFUUUUUUUU

That blows.

Er, how (and why) would they leave you a note telling you a package had arrived if it hadn't?

How would they know you were expecting a package?

Are the Norwegian Postal Services blessed with the powers of precognition?

I don't know about this case, but the following (or something like) has happened to my family:

1) The truck that is doing the delivery calls at your house, but finds no-one home. The driver leaves a card to say that he/she tried to deliver a parcel and then continues on his round.

2) We return home, find the card and go out to the Post Office Depot to collect it. When we get there, they look but cannot find anything for us. We go home disappointed.

3) The delivery truck then returns to the depot and offloads the mail that couldn't be delivered.

For this reason, I think that such "parcel couldn't be delivered" cards suggest that you wait for 12 or 24 hours before attempting to visit the depot. At least, the Royal Mail does this in the UK.

It really sucks when you *know* what is in the parcel and that your mail is nearby – but you still cannot get it until the weekend has passed.

What happens is that the dispatch office gets the package, if it's to big for the mail box, they xerox the package, and make a note, that the postman puts in your box, at the same time, the package get sent from dispatch to the post office, but some times the package takes 1 or more days to get to the post office.

Yeah, what colgar6 says – if the guy is still on his round he hasn't had a chance to return it to the sorting office.

Simples, as we young people say.

I understand that, at least there's a physical package orbiting the postal system (see below for my similar experience). In Gunny's case it seems as if the package isn't even in the local delivery system.

I had a 'sorry you were out' card. Off I trot to the local Royal Mail depot. I turn up just before closing and present the card.

Bloke on the desk goes to look for it, and reappears with a, "Sorry mate, it's not here".

"Ah" says I, "the time on the card is 9:10, it's now 17:30. Is the postman on my round still working?"

"Nah, he'll have finished work by now"

"Then why hasn't he returned my package here? I assume that if it isn't here, he's taken it home with him?"

"…"

"I'd like to speak to the Postmaster, or whatever his title is these days, and register a formal complaint"

That has happened to me more than once.
I have also been overdue parcels and had no card shoved in my hole but a trip to the local depot shows it to be there.

Thats impossible here, the postal system is just a big computer now, if I got to the post office and say, hey I've been waiting for a package for 3 weeks now, can you check if you have a package with my name on it, they say.

Sorry, unless you got the spesific number of the package we can't finde it.

I say, but look over there, there is were the packages are, there are only 10 packages there, and I can tell you that 3 of them are too small to be mine, also mine is from the UK, so you can ignore any package from Norway.

That leaves 1 package out of 1 to check to see if it's mine.

Sorry can't do that, with out the tracking number we can't do anything.

But sir/mam it would take you 30 seconds to check those 7 packages that might be mine,

Sorry.

This has happened to me too. The returned parcels get re-sorted overnight ready for collection the next day. Except they don't since the local sorting office stopped working night shifts, so now it takes 48 hours. Sometimes longer, a lot longer (ten days is the record so far).

Which is why I get packages delivered to work whenever possible.

TamsinP21 Jan 2012 9:49 a.m. PST

I always wait until at least the next day – the "Sorry you were out" card does say to allow 24 hours before attempting to collect.

Big Jim21 Jan 2012 9:55 a.m. PST

It is a pain, especially as my local sorting office is a bit of a trek.

I am lucky, as I can currently have stuff delivered to my work place. It saves a lot of faffing about and the post girl is getting pretty good at identifing whats in the parcels.

There's nothing worse than having a card shoved in your hole, ewwwwwww….:0)

Lentulus21 Jan 2012 6:07 p.m. PST

I actually pay for a mailbox service so I don't have to mess around with that sort of foolishness. Or worse, magazines left at the door in a rainstorm.
