Knowing the book, a fair review on it that reflects my own views. Thanks for sharing…

I'm a great fan of this book as well but it is not without its flaws. Geoffrey Parker gave it a scathing review (in The English Historical Review, vol. 144, pp. 169-70) mainly citing Hall's false claim that, "By the mid-seventeenth century the 'musket' was in almost every respect exactly the same as the sixteenth century 'arquebus' (i.e., a shoulder arm firing a 15-20 g shot from a gun weighing less than 5 kg." Our pal Daniel S pointed this error out on TMP some time ago, TMP link. Parker concludes by stating, "In a book whose main purpose is to chart each and every change in the history of gunpowder and firearms, blunders like this cast doubt on the value of the enterprise." Ouch.

I say read it for the chapters on blackpowder production and smoothbore ballistics. This is where the book really shines.
