Nooo, but given Heinlein's prose and style of writing, if Rico had to learn how to walk around on powered armour stilts like your hapless occupants of those Corsair suits you're so proud of, Rico would have said so!

Well, if you actually read the book, Heinlein says it's shocking, given the appearance of the armour, that you can just put it on and walk and manipulate things with it right away. Why would that be so amazing if the suit is a glorified Star Wars stormtrooper outfit? Gives the impression that the armour is massive and looks very difficult to operate without lots of training.

Speaking of which ….

Hey Leland, the 1970s called, they want their sketches from the back of Geometry notebook back!

I don't recall Heinlein saying that the MI had their heads removed before first putting on the armour! wink

do i recall something about a hydrocephalic gorilla ?

Failure1616 Jun 2012 12:53 p.m. PST

WHile Heinlein never explicitly states the actual height of the MI's armor, he routinely calls them "suits" and goes out of his way in Chapter VII to illustrate that even a novice can wear the suit immediately and do everything they could outside it--something that they most likely could not do if the suit itself was ~15 feet tall as the Corsairs are. The movements described are uniquely human inasmuch as they require a human's size and physical construction in order to accomplish.

Indeed, it is described as "a big steel gorilla, armed with gorilla-sized weapons…that you just wear…like your clothes" (Page 81, Ace 1987 Edition). Additionally, it cannot be over ten feet tall because Rico later falls into a hole "ten or fifteen feet [deep]…enough to be out of the daylight"; as mentioned before, an armored suit could move through a Bug tunnel by 'skating' its feet while a man could merely trot (Pages 195-6). Furthermore, on page 187, two combat engineers in identical armored suits show up with the 'senser' in a "utility air car"; at no time is the vast disparity in size mentioned regarding the unarmored special talent and the armored men that surround him. Indeed, in the various pre-combat scenes, close-order inspections are performed with suits, physical belt-switches are mentioned, in drop capsules the troopers are belted "forehead, belly, and shins", and troopers talk "helmet-to-helmet" vice radio--all of which is unlikey if the suits themselves are twice the height of a normal man, and therefore the proportions would be way, way off.

In short form, I love the look of the Khurasan Corsairs and the rest of the Earthdoom line, but given the evidence, they are far too large for Heinlein's MI. Indeed, while the upcoming Brigade/Germy powered armor are in the 18-20mm range, I figure they will do for my current needs (triple role--BattleMechs for 3mm SF, infantry walkers for 6mm SF, and PA for 15mm).

Yes, i read those arguments the first time you made them in this thread and I don't think there's anything dispositive there on size of suit.

The one thing for sure is that he DID NOT say what size they were, so it's open to interpretation. Some like them little, some like them big. In fact, many interpretations of the MI suit have it just about the same size as the Corsair.

Failure1616 Jun 2012 2:13 p.m. PST

You can dismiss the text as much as you want--but the salient point is that Heinlein never once said "it's shocking, given the appearance of the armour, that you can just put it on and walk and manipulate things with it right away" (your words, not an indication I think you think it is a direct quote from the book).

What I have done is provide evidence to contraindicate your interpretation of the Corsair as stand-ins for Heinlein's MI suits. You cannot do the same. Rejection of proof to clues in the text that you purport to have followed so closely does yourself a disservice.

On the other hand, the suits you have produced are very nice looking indeed, and what I imagine is a fair price in light of that. Thus, you should be proud. Also, as you say, "some like them little, some like them big" and people can vote or not as they see fit. But that doesn't change the fact that your Corsairs (and the rest of the Earthdoom range; beautiful models all!) are clearly more vehicles that are controlled as opposed to suits that are worn.

steve atkinson16 Jun 2012 3:16 p.m. PST

I love the models , context depends on individual interpretation,I use my own universe ,I look forward to more – JTFB rules .[hint]

Eli Arndt16 Jun 2012 3:50 p.m. PST

I'm going to ask, DOES IT REALLY MATTER?

I mean really this has been a whole lot of talk back and forth over whether or not a miniatures made is somehow an accurate interpretation of some piece of hardware that it is only marginally designed to represent if that.

The Corsairs are cool and really do stand up well in their own right, despite individual interpretations of what they represent more or less.

I for one happen to agree with "Failure16's" analysis of Heinlein's prose.

*What* picture, Jon?evil grin

Hey Leland, the 1970s called, they want their sketches from the back of Geometry notebook back!

(1) We didn't have an official Geometry notebook, (2) I never wrote on my public school textbooks IIRC (lots of doodles in my notebooks my parents had to purchase, but that's another story), (3) my own poor sketches over the years notwithstanding, I never once have ever purported to be a Michelangelo or a Da Vinci with a sketchpad… more of a Picasso or a Jackson Pollock, but that's about as far as I dare take matters…evil grin

Funny man. Now get back on yer horse and release those JTFB goodies, as I am fast approaching the need for something to paint again, and delving into my Unpainted Lead Pile From Hell just isn't appealing to me at the moment!evil grin

Just saying … evil grin

Yeah, yeah, just pickin' fights!evil grin

Leland R. Erickson

P.S. I *will* get round to buying some of your armoured stilt walkers (aka "Corsairs") down the road once I get my JTFB force done. Promise, and yes, mine will be in a camo spec on principle…evil grin
