I've read the Flashman book and am currently half way throught Featherstone's At them with the bayonet. Inspired by the Newline Design 20mm figures I'm looking to use TFL Sharpe Practice for large skirmish games. Any hints or pointers to uniform info organisation info for this period gratefully received. Thanks in advance. Phil |

THE SIKH WARS 1823-1849: Colonial Campaigns Author: Tilson, Tim I believe On Military Matters has a few. The Sikh Army 1799-1849 Osprey (Men-at-Arms) Illustrated by Michael Perry. Try Amazon. Empress Miniatures will be working on a Sikh Wars range sometime later this year. I'm assuming in 28mm. |

As for organization and the like for the Sikh wars--Sometime this spring or summer (I believe, but I expect Andrew or Patrick will be along shortly to provide more definitive information but until then
.), the Virtual Armchair General (Patrick Wilson) will be publishing the definitive guide to the First and Second Anglo-Sikh wars with complete OBs for the British forces and the most comprehensive OBs ever for the Sikhs by the estimable Andrew Preziosi, with scholarly contributions by Mike Embree and Chris Ferree, and some minor contributions concerning small arms by me. As for books now available, the Osprey is not at all bad, and Gough & Innes is very useful. Frazier, if I recall correctly, relied on George Bruce's "Six Battles for India," copies of which are available from time to time, Cunningham's book on the Sikhs and Pearse's book on Alexander Gardner. Cook's "the Sikh Wars" is also a pretty good potted history of the Sikh Wars and can be found with some searching, and Thackwell's book on the Second war is a good period piece (IIRC, he was son of the cavalry Thackwell and served as an Aide to his father in the Second war). There are also a bunch of regimental type histories available from Leonaur Press. I strongly recommend R.G. Burton's "History of the First and Second Sikh Wars." Burton was a British officer given the job of writing histories of selected wars abut a century ago. His histories of the Mahratta and Pindari wars and Wellington's Campaigns in India, for example, are useful. His history of the First and Second Sikh Wars has recently been reprinted, and is available in an inexpensive paperback. I don't think the others are in print other than in Indian editions. If you want to do smaller fights, Tim Tilson's book will be just your thing as it is designed for smaller Sword and Flame type battles. Oh, and as for uniforms and such
in addition to the Osprey, someone, John Watts I believe, did a series of articles (4-6 I believe) for either Miniature Wargames or Wargames Illustrated some 10-15 years or so back. Maybe 8 years or so ago, John, Andrew, Patrick, some others and I exchanged information in postings here and you can probably glean some additional information from those postings. There are also some more obscure books out there, and several books on British colonial history (Bond, for example) that have sections on the Sikh wars. PM me if you want more information. Dennis |

As ever, Brother McKinney is johnny-on-the-spot for tinned fruit's post! Take his scholarly words to heart--anyone similarly interested--and follow his trail to some fascinating history, and the grounding for some great gaming. And, yes, as soon as A) Andrew Preziosi completes the last sections on the 2nd Sikh War, and B) His overbooked Editor/Publisher can finish the work needed for final layout, illustration, etc, the "Sikh Wars Source Book" will be printed, probably by early Spring (HA!). It will be simply the most complete source on the military details of the Khalsa, First and 2nd Sikh Wars in any language, ever. No brag, just fact. The scholarship here is amazing, the work required unimaginable to anyone not obsessed (medically!) with learning all there is, and putting all down in one place. You will see what I mean, and soon enough! TVAG |
