Played the first game of our Day One campaign. The Klingons put a hurting on the Federation in this round. The next couple won't be so easy.

The Armada SFU games always sound like they're very bloody and quick to me. Not that ships don't pop fast in SFB/FC as well, but they do so mostly at overload range, not from medium-to-long range. The Starmada port seems to extend the lethality zone a lot – or is that just my imagination?

While Starmada does make ships go "pop" more quickly, in the Starmada version of SFU it still mostly happens in overload range. It's been a while since I've looked at my Federation Commander stuff, but the difference is probably the range at which overloads can fire. It may be a little further out in Starmada in order to fit into that system's combat system and how ranges are handled. Overall though it does a fair job of "feeling" like FC (never played SFB).

Also, in my games I'm using smaller board than most SFB/FC games call for so there's not a whole lot of pre-engagement maneuvering. To make things last a little longer and feel more "Trek" we use the optional damage control rules from the Starmada main book and in this last game a house rule to reinforce a shield facing by weakening an adjacent facing.

Personally I like the quickness of the games, I can get a few ships on each side, finish in reasonable amount of time, and have fun with it. I generally don't have a lot of time for the hobby so I like to make it count when I can.
