I need to make some paper banners and flags, for 15mm/18mm sloops, brigs, frigates, and possibly larger 4th or 5th rate vessels, so would like to know what size flags people would recommend, for the mainmast, and/or mizzen?

Also, would like to know what you recommend for troops carrying a banner or flag on shore?

Same goes for 25mm/28mm vessels as well.

I assume smaller flags for the smaller vessels, and a bit larger for the big ones. Timeframe is primarily for the 1630 – 1725, or so, but might as well ask for the later 1700's, and Napoleonic eras too, while we're at it.

Thoughts?

Ship's flags tended to be quite large, getting smaller as time went on.

I have a list of sizes for English/British ships somewhere – if I can find it I will post later.

Mako

Here are the figures I found – for English ships in 1691.

wide long
1691 feet feet

1st Ensign & Flag 23.8 42.0
Jack 12.8 21.0
pennant 2.8 96.0
2nd Ensign & Flag 20.2 37.5
Jack 11.0 18.0
pennant 2.8 87.0
3rd Ensign & Flag 18.3 33.0
Jack 9.2 15.0
pennant 2.8 84.0
4th Ensign & Flag 16.5 30.0
Jack 9.2 15.0
pennant 2.8 72.0
5th Ensign & Flag 14.7 24.0
Jack 7.3 12.0
pennant 2.8 66.0

The formatting comes out wrong but you should be able to get the necessary sizes.

Wow, that is a lot of variability.

Thanks for the info.

I really appreciate it.

The details should help me to get in the ballpark, with at least a few of them.

Wow, bigger than I had thought!

I was going to say the 'Carrier' sized flag in modern times is actually 30x50 feet, but most ships fly a much smaller flag in the 15x25 range. Even the Constitution flies a 'small' flag (~9x15 or so).
