Can anyone fill me in on how the recent Eureka release of US Marines were painted.

I'm speaking specifically of the painted examples on Eureka's website…

They just look "right", and I'd love to know how they were done.

Thanks!

Looks to me like stiff bristle stippling.

Basically, use stiffer bristled brushes (bigger sized brush, maybe a #4 flat), get barely enough paint on them (think heavy drybrush) and instead of sweeping the brush across the figure, come at a right angle onto the figure so only scattered random "spots" of paint get applied.

It takes practice to get the right amount of paint, and not to end up with lines instead of spots, but all in all, not that difficult to master.

Also – less is more when trying any new technique… Always easier to go light and reapply than to go at it to enthusiastically and end up gobbed and have to start all over again from scratch

I do not know how Kostas painted those on the Eureka page, but here is my technique for MARPAT (with colours for the woodlands version) and ACU:

If you look at the previous posts on my blog you can see lots of examples how they turn out.

If you want to ask Kostas himself… just drop Nic at Eureka an eMail and he will pass it on.

Cheers,

Burkhard

Thanks Rob!!

Nic also was nice enough to send me the same link.

I've ordered up the paints that I needed, and I'll be ready to tackle them as soon as the paints arrive!

GregS

Does anyone know what other colours are used, eg for the boots?

essayons714 Jan 2012 3:23 p.m. PST

I'm not sure what Kosta used, but I usually use 977 desert yellow from Vallejo for the boots.

Greg, I got some of these and they are great figs, I think the best out there in 25mm. The ones I got were painted in green digitized and look great, I am going to try and match them, or paint the other half of the squad in tan digitize.

Another technique I have used in the past that is tricky, but if you have a rainy afternoon try dipping paint onto a tooth brush then flicking back the bristles and letting the paint spatter on the fig. Takes getting used to but handles the really small dot thing pretty well, and I have used it for SS camo.
Good luck
Mark
