Hi all, Been searching for an in depth review of Martian Empires, but no luck so far. Can anybody point me in the right direction? Also been looking at the Black Hat Prussian figures and was wondering if the army list for all the new figs released are in the rulebook or are maybe online somewhere? Cheers Andy :-) |

Have played Volley & Bayonet for Suodan but today tried Martian Empires. Play VERY well, make senses to have hidden markers, and gave results similar to what I had read in numerious accounts of 1884/85 battles. Easily do for Zulus. But have to say Martian Empires is good. using 15mm figures 16 figure (4 stands) battalions (40mm x 20mm regulars,Irregulars 40mm x 40mm) 2 section gun battery, 8 figs (4 stands)cavalry. Brigade & division leaders have command ranges, can be normal or inspiring (suggest make own factors for uninspiring) movement is 15cm regular infantry, 20cm irregular infantry. roll to move unit (battalion only or Brigade move, your choice) lower than leaders rating eg 8 or less, then move them again (IN THE SAME TURN!) 7 or less, then again 6 or less. However if he fails a roll, thats it for his Brigade. 3 hits remove the stand. one thing after melee hits on the winner disappear. We keep them on.Martini Henry/Remington rifle range 30cm, close range 15cm. Can choose the factors to suit your units by giving them their own fire, melee & morale factors as these all seperate. very easy system. played with 2 D6 snakeeyes always hits, 12 misses. Low is good. Have played Black powder twice with Zulus
yeah, it was allright I suppose. Played POW a bit. it was ok/good. TSATF never really did it for big battles(Sudan/Zulus/Abbyssina) Played Space 1889 a lot. Does NW Frontier well & smaller Africa battles
But Martian Empire is a good fast play, easy to pick up game. link link |

Andy, The rule book has all the army lists in for the figs we have produced so far, plus the French which will be done this year. Home Service British, Expeditionary Force British, Imperial Martians, Giant Tribal Martians, Cephalods, Prussians and French. We will be putting out a small PDF supplement to cover the Venus armies such as Lizardmen, Tolero, etc. Mike |

Rulebook army lists (from memory) covers Brits Home Guard; British, French and Prussian on Mars; Imperial and Tribal martians on Mars (with 3 variants for different Imperial forces), and Martian invaders on Earth. Venus figures are currently being previewed and look very nice, additional lists for them will be along at some point. Good fun game, easy for people to pick up, and my club actually ask to play it which has to be a good sign. Very friendly and helpful yahoogroup. |

only other thing I would do is drop the Guards fire factor by 1 to that of the line infantry. From my reading they had better moral whereas the Rifles should have a higher fire factor. Or even drop then 1 factor below the Line Infantry? French are coming out? SWEEET!!
(Any chance of Russians with sack coats & Kepis with neck-curtains?) |

:-) Take comfort: the author can't beat his editor at his own game. :-) Sorry Mike. :-) Ian |

Hi guys, Thanks for all the replies. I'm in Oz and was hoping to get the rules and starter army at the same time to save on postage. I don't see a Prussian starter army in the store. Any chance you could put one together? What would be the composition? Cheers Andy :-) |
| deflatermouse | 08 Jan 2012 12:41 a.m. PST |
an example Prussian army in the book is 1 Army Leader (compulsory) 2 Prussian Commanders 4 Infantry (compulsory) (battalions I'd say) 2 Rocket Troops (Maximum) ditto 2 Nordenfeldt artillery (Maximum) 2 Lancers 1 Clockwork Infantry (in the factors list they are listed as 1 stand. Not sure how that works). I'm hoping to do an Iron Brigade which is mostly Krupps mechanical men with Jagers, Clockwork Infantry & Cuirassiers as the basic troop type with bigger Mechs filling up the speciality options. such as these guys (2 stands?) being the next up from the Clockwork Infantry link with a bigger fellow above them. (Omnimech from the Incerdibles?) The system is fairly flexible as a friend is doing the Anglo-Afghan war 0f 1879 with them. I'm doing the Anglo-Egyptian-Sudan & planning on the Italian-Abysinnain(-Sudanese) wars.

Thanks for that. Mike-Blackhat , what figures would put in a starter army pack for the Prussians? Cheers Andy :-) |

Andy Apologies, hadn't seen this. You are right that I should put together a Prussian Starter army now the vehicles are out. It would have a similar composition to the British army pack of: 2 x Infantry units 1 x Rocket Troopers 1 x Clockwork Troopers 2 x Askari 1 x Lancers 1 x Artillery 1 x Leader 2 x Commander 1 x Light Tank Which would normally be £66.00 GBP but will be £60.00 GBP as a starter pack. Hope that helps – if you want to drop me an email I can sort this out for you. Mike |
