I'd like to do the House of Sforza up as a recall to my Milanese heritage but in metal it's going to cost me a small fortune for the size I'm after. In plastic I seem to be managing to fully option an army out within a budget of about $200 USD with the odd metal miniature thrown in. In metal this will buy but a few – if lovely! – units.
Anyone have any tips (and no GW, please, I really don't like their proportions much – that and their prices….) or links to plastic Renaissance figure lines I can do this in please?
Thank you!
S.

Unfortunately currently there are no plastic 28 mm kits for 16th century Europe available.

The closest thing you can get would probably be the Perry miniatures later 15th century range, which would work for the first years of the Italian wars. Currently this range contains two sets of plastic infantry, with a set of plastic heavy cavalry in the works, as well as various metal models.

I second old glory's 28mms..

Landsknechts are great…
The Swiss are good… though of a slightly earlier period….
The Spanish are great… but lack a command…

(BTW, about 10 years ago I had a conversation with Russ of OG… He commented… "Damn I really need to do a Spanish command"…. we still wait)…..You need to fill in with TAG Spanish….

Knights are great… for Italian Knights… less good for French or Spanish…. I used Foundry…mainly….

Italians are great… but really from the 1500-1510 period… with shields and all….

Damn….30 Old Glory figures for $35 USD is a-ok, actually
Would Old Glory Army apply to this (%50 on the table for 40% off?)

Mako1106 Jan 2012 8:43 p.m. PST

You get 40% off with the OG Army, so yes.

I third the recommendation for Old Glory. One of their best ranges.

Yep the Old Glory with the Army Card deal is the best way to go. The Renaissance figures paint up very well. The biggest pain is drilling the hands to put pike in them. The other thing about the Old Glory line is that it is a very extensive line so they have just about anything you could want for the period. Are there figures out there in 28mm metal that look better? The Old Glory also match well with Foundry, Artizan, and Redoubt ranges for the period.

If the Perry's were to do this I may have a seizure

Well, the Perry's European Infantry works for French and Italian foot for the earliest part of the Italian Wars (1494-1510-ish) especially if the European heads are used and Swiss halberds are replaced with alternative pole arms.

Sadly the OG landsknechts will not really yield you any Italian Sforza troops – their spanish might, though, and they did have some Swiss under contract (well, we know where this ended). TAG might be the best option for Ialians. You can also go for some of the Perry mercenary infantry, if adding their optional metal heads.

And I agree with Stuart – if the Perries will actually do early 16th century foot, it will be a field day for me. For now, I am eagerly awaiting their Gensdarmes.

Up to what year are you looking at?
Perry plastic Mercs are perfect with careful head choices for Italian troops.
I too cannot wait for the Mounted MAA in plastic!
Like Stuart if they did the landsknecht and all I would have an apoplexy!

Well, the Perries almost did plastic landsknechts with the Empire infantry they sculpted for GW (released circa 1998), the main issue being the swords and scabbards were not in the landsknecht style.

I have around 30 of those models for my landsknecht collection, with the metal handgun arms that GW also released for them. For better historicality, I have however replaced the sword scabbards with more suitable ones from TAG – though those swords hiked up the cost of the models (bought second hand) quite a lot.

For those using O.G. figures for Swiss and Spanish, what figures do you recommend for early war (1495-1515) French?

Condottiere10 Apr 2012 6:10 a.m. PST

Not OG, but Perry plastic European Infantry would fit the bill for the earliest part of the Italuan Wars French.
