To prevent a third one from ever coming into being:

"Luke, I want you to meet my new girlfriend."

"But. . . all you have there is . . . my hand."

". . . "

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And in the next one:

"Luke…I am your father."

"Hi dad. Let's kick some ass!"

or much earlier:

"Mmm. Wampa hungry now."

And in RotJ:

"Captain, shoot that 'casual' shuttle down."

"Old Ben Kenobi? I think he's dead."

"Good thing this little guy still has on his restraining bolt."

"Hey, son, let's start your education like your friends did, and get your application to the Imperial TIE Flight Academy turned in today."

"Your father wanted me to give this to you, when you were old enough … now where the poodu did I put that thing?"

"Yavin is behind that gas giant? This base destroys planets, right? Just take out the big one first."

We could do the same thing for LotR:
"Hey, instead of walking to Mordor, why don't we fly there on those giant eagles?"

"Yavin is behind that gas giant? This base destroys planets, right? Just take out the big one first."

Not sure you can really destroy a gas giant that easily….it's a gas giant after all. There's little to no solid matter. Maybe use predictive gunnery and fire through it? :)

The thought of destroying a gas giant makes me wonder about the orbital mechanics of the moons' anchor being suddenly dissipated.

…the moons' anchor being suddenly dissipated…

Might not matter. Mass is mass, and the center of mass would remain the same, whether the planet still has a solid core or not. So the gravitational attraction to the moons would remain much as it was for at least a significant amount of time, until such time as a truly gross portion of the planet's initial mass changed position. Even presuming that the initial outward velocity of the explosion approached a significant fraction of C, which is highly unlikely ( to the point of impossible), it would take quite some time for the mass to reach the presumed orbital distance of the moons, especially a moon far enough from the gas giant's own radiation belts to sustain life to the degree depicted on Yavin 4. All that time, the planet's mass would also be pulling inward as well, swiftly decelerating the outward velocity, eventually causing the gas giant to reform. While there would probably be some catastrophic effects, they would probably be delayed long enough for the Rebel forces to stage an effective evacuation. In the meantime, their fighters would still be picking at the Death Star while it recharged its main weapon, probably destroying the DS before the power cycle was completed.
