What are these chaps wearing? I am not sure what a puffball is?

Would it happen to be the shako with the sloping rear and a pompom?

Thanks in advance.

Puffball isn't the real name of any hat in the CW. Someone just made that up because they didn't know the real name of it. I'm also not sure what the hell that is. It might be what is called a Wheel hat but… I don't know. If you google a Wheel hat you will see what I mean.

It is a Mexican war style US forage cap.

Yes, I have some here, purchased several years ago, in my unpainted Redoubt ACW boxes and I recall them as Doc describes them. Basically the standard wear for US infantry and dragoons.

The image at the top is a shako.

This is a Mexican War Forage Cap.

Ah thank you gentlemen. I know they do a similar shako because there is one in the "Ragged Rebs" set. I wonder if they can be purchased in packs?

Just so you know, these fell out of style by the CW but you still might see a few very early on. By the end of 62 I would doubt you would see any!

"By the end of 62 I would doubt you would see any!" Pretty much correct. They were just too expensive to make in large enough numbers. Most remaining by 62 were in militia units up north.
