What are the best set of rules for the ECW period and what are they like and/or why are they the best??

MajorB20 Dec 2011 4:39 p.m. PST

Please say what you mean by "best"?

Still looking for the perfect set….

I still like Forlorn Hope, have a good 'period vibe' but the mechanisms are a bit slow by todays standards, best for a medium-sized game I reckon

1644 is better suited for a big game, it flows more quickly but the casualty rates are a bit excessive for the period.

Terry Wise's rules from Athena had some good ideas, like making infantry regiments quite unweildy to avoid cheesy maneuvers.

The old WRG Renaissance rules usually gave a good game, but not sure I'd be able to read those charts without a magnifying glass these days

File Leader were fun for a smaller 'company-based' game, with comedy officer incidents.

I have Warhammer ECW and Polemos but not got around to trying them out yet, looking forward to Black Powder and In the Buffe!

"Best" means what you want it to mean.

"Best" means what you want it to mean.

Precisely, so what does the OP mean?

We played Victory Without Quarter the other week and had a blast. The rules have a few holes but you can work round them if you use your 'nonce'.

We played a lot of ECW games with various rules but two were our prefered here : Forlon Hope and Warhammer ECW (maybe WH best set of rules)

I like For God, King, and Country

I do have Warhammer ECW and am very interested in giving it a try. It's worth it alone for the production value of the book …

Bloody Kingdom, that's Father Tilly for ECW. And again, the incoming Pike & Shotte from WG.

But seeing the twin thread regarding the TYW, I'd say the Father Tilly looks specially suitable, including Bloody Kingdom, with its campaign system included. It's cheap, you can download it, and well supported.

EDIT: here it is!

I have run a fair amount of Warhammer ECW for 28mm and I am looking at Regiment of Foote for 15mm. In regards to Warhammer ECW we have always had fun games. While not perfect, (what miniature rule system is?) I think it gives a probable outcome and it is easy to teach to others not familiar with the period because of the popularity of the Warhammer system. And like any war gamer I have tossed in a few tweaks of my own design to have the game run more the way I personally feel it should while attempting to not break the system. Whether or not Warhammer ECW is the best rules for the period is a matter of preference. And really when questions are asked on TMP as to what is the best rule system for "x" in the end it will come down to what the gamer is looking for, which is often a very esoteric thing.

With that stated I have heard good things about Forlorn Hope, and 1644. There also appears to be a Pike and Shot version of Hail Caesar about to be published as well. Back to Warhammer ECW, it has had a long run now and while the Yahoo Group for the game is not very active there is a wealth of material in the forum files to aid the gamer. Now personally I prefer to run scenarios using Warhammer ECW instead of going with the points based system. Partisan Press has three very good scenario books for use with the most popular rules systems including Warhammer ECW.

We have tried Warhammer ECW and Forlorn Hope and much prefer Forlorn Hope. The period feel is better and the rules play quickly and well.

We have even had Parliament Horse stop a charge by Royalist Horse by pistol fire. That was an eye-opener for some of our players.

Have played "Regiment of Foote" and "File Leader" but still looking. Prefer one not written by a Brit. No offense intended but our very good friends across the pond have a funny way of writing rules.

Perfect Captain Actions great game with a fun campaign system!

Second Forlorn Hope, and would love to see a conversion of the GMP Boardgame Musket and Pike series converted to minatures!

I have tried a couple of different sets but dont really like any yet. I am getting a copy of Field of Glory: Renaissance to try for both ECW and 3YW as I have heard good things about it recently. I am hoping for something that can reproduce the feeling of uncertainty that seemed to be present with units of the time. From what I have read they could fight hard one minute, break the next and then be back at it hammer and tongs the next. I have tried 1644 extensively and just cant warm up to them.

Always enjoyed WECW
