Just picked up this set. hlj.com/product/FTS60104 I was mainly interested in the P-39 models as they are uncommon in 1/144. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the one shown with Italian markings also includes Soviet decals, so the national insignia are not already applied. This will allow me to easily mark this as a US aircraft. Similarly, the Rumanian Bf-109 markings are supplied as decals, so I will probably make this a Luftwaffe aircraft instead. In addition to the nine models shown, the box contains a tenth "secret" aircraft. My "secret" model is a P-39 with markings that are very unusual. It has US markings on standard OD over gray, but there's a wide white stripe in a spiral pattern running down the entire fuselage. The wing leading and trailing edges also have wide white stripes. I've never seen these markings and so far I've not been able to identify the unit or specific aircraft. I'll be assembling some of these soon, probably the P-39s first. Scott |

Okay, I found several of the "secret" P-39s on ebay. One description identifies it as a target drone, which makes sense given the high visibility markings. |

A quick interweb search shows the only use of P-39 was by the USN
and no more than 1-3 planes. The only picture does not match the markings you describe. The Air Corps/Air Force converted some P-63 to targets (the "Pinball". |

svs, are there alternative markings with the British/RAF version? |

@poiter, the RAF P-39 has the roundels already on the upper wing surfaces, while the fuselage and lower wing markings are on a decal sheet. Probably wouldn't be too difficult to change the nationality, just paint/decal over the upper wing roundels. |
