Is there a favourite armed force/faction prefered when wargaming the SCW?

1. Carlist Monarchist Militia
2. Falangist Militia
3. Spanish Foreign Legion
4. Spanish Regular Army (Nationalist)
5. Guardia Civil (Nationalist)
6. Anarcho-Syndicalist Militia
7. Communist Militia
8. International Brigades
9. Spanish Regular Army (Republican)
10. Guardia Civil (Republican)
11. Assault Guards
12. Italian CTV
13. Others (please specify)

I'm gaming P.O.U.M./Anarco-Syndicalist Milita (6.) having read and enjoyed George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia.

If I played it would be Lincoln Brigade. A high school friend of my mother's was a volunteer. He never came home.

My Moroccans have a very good track record … hard to beat ..

The Gray Ghost08 Dec 2011 5:23 p.m. PST

Spanish Foreign Legion is what I have the most figures for.

I prefer the Carlists and the CNT/FAI. I like tilting at windmills.

John the OFM08 Dec 2011 5:49 p.m. PST

I played in one of Pat Condray's games. Once. I had a good time. I forget who I played. grin
Obviously, I had no emotional investment in the faction I played.

Carlist requetes because of their cool berets and old-fashioned thinking for the Nationalists and the Anarchists for the Republic for their hapless idealism. My first troops were Assaltos though because they were on both sides.

vtsaogames08 Dec 2011 9:54 p.m. PST

Poum, and Eric Blair (Orwell).

Not played yet. I am painting some 28mm POUM.

I have
IB with flags for Canadians and Brits
CNT
I use RCW figs for 5th Regiment
Morrocans
Foreign Legion
Falange
Requetes
Generic regulars which I use for either side.

Ran a Falange vs IB game at Historicon – I root for the reaper when those two fight.

Chortle Fezian09 Dec 2011 8:55 a.m. PST

Another vote for the army of africa. Great uniforms.

Martin Rapier09 Dec 2011 9:29 a.m. PST

I have a horrible feeling that the POUM are Marxists not anarchists. Anyway, favourite, the Durutti column, proper anarchists! I do also have a certain fondness for the bad boys of the Army of Africa. Viva la muerta and all that.

Richard Baber09 Dec 2011 10:14 a.m. PST

If I was going to create a new army it would be Poum militia or Durutti Column.

I already own substantial units of Regulares and La Legion troops from my Rif War armies.

dualer09 Dec 2011 11:02 a.m. PST

Los Novios de la Muerte every time.

Zopenco 209 Dec 2011 2:07 p.m. PST

It seems that everybody loves just the few first months of the war, as I can see that the reformed Ejército Popular de la República is not an option

Patrice09 Dec 2011 3:11 p.m. PST

I have a horrible feeling that the POUM are Marxists
Yeees they are :-)

It seems that everybody loves just the few first months of the war
The POUM was banned in June 1937 and its leaders murdered by the Stalinists so people who want to play POUM have not much choice.

Mike O09 Dec 2011 5:08 p.m. PST

Damn it, I just can't decide… ;~)

BlackWidowPilot Fezian09 Dec 2011 7:58 p.m. PST

1) Abraham Lincoln Brigade

2) Foreign Legion ("The Betrothed of Death")

3) Italian CTV

4) Anarchist Militias (any unit that had to take a vote about whether or not to actually follow an order from the higher command structure is a must-have in a wargames army… Bwahahahaaa!!!)evil grin

Dashetal11 Dec 2011 6:50 p.m. PST

Like once was said on these boards. There were no good guys on either side. Just shades of gray. Idealist, maybe but both side were pretty nasty. On that note I have built all the forces mentioned and enjoy gaming all of them. The uniforms, equipment is so art deco the romance is there as long as you dont read too deeply.

AlanYork13 Dec 2011 6:13 p.m. PST

Communist militia for me. I don't have any as my regular opponent John already has 'em. I have the next best thing though; Anarchist militia and they do OK on the table against John's various Nationalist companies, winning as many times as they lose.

For when I have to play Nationalist I use the Falange, the best of a bad bunch IMO and at least they have the grace to lose every time and I do mean EVERY time!!!!

Fatman19 Dec 2011 11:27 a.m. PST

How long have you got!?! ;-)

Don't forget the Carbineros, customs with heavy machine guns gotta love that.

J Womack 9419 Dec 2011 11:39 a.m. PST

I'd go Spanish Foreign Legion.

Grand Duke Natokina19 Dec 2011 5:21 p.m. PST

Viva Durruti!

Etranger20 Dec 2011 3:32 a.m. PST

Durutti Column – how many other militias have a band named after them?

John the Greater20 Dec 2011 6:22 a.m. PST

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Condor Legion.

Dropship Horizon04 Jan 2012 5:22 a.m. PST

Unlike the Italian CTV, the Condor Legion had no real identifiable combat forces on the ground. They supplemented Nationalist forces with tank, anti-tank gun and artillery units but did not have a force of their own that could be turned into an identifiable tabletop 'army'.

From an aerial perspective the answer is of course different.

Cheers
Mark

Dropship Horizon04 Jan 2012 5:31 a.m. PST

It's a hard question to answer….. I have a soft spot for P.O.U.M. due to Orwell. Asaltos because they were mean Bleeped texts. CTV and Garibaldis (XII International Brigade). 1936 Thaelmann Column because of Romilly, and Spanish Foreign Legion.

Cheers
Mark
