and stick with it. Writing in Battlegames magazine, Mike Siggins regrets choosing 30mm and sticking with it

It makes sense if your "new" projects can interact with each other. In my Ancients days, most of my armies evolved as offsoots or enemies. I needed 25mm Carthaginians to fight my Romans (which I never really did much with). Gauls came about as auxiliaries of the Carthagos. Persians came about as eemies for my Macedonians and my Indians were Persian auxiliaries. Then, getting into Vikings and knights, it was just natural to stay with 25mm. (We din' have no stinkin' 28mm back then
) Ral Partha did colonials in 25mm, so
When I ordered Ancients from Hinchliffe, it was natural to add on to the order for their AWI. Plus, back then, 15mm figures were not at all that good. I got used to painting 25mm, even though I took a stab at Der Kriegspieler 15mm ACW (sold) and Napoleinics (sold twice). So, I did stick with 25mm, mostly. I don't regret it. |

It certainly makes collecting/building scenery a lot easier. As is I try to make most of my scenery as scale agnostic as possible. |

I regret all the years I spend with 28mm and 30mm+. I am FAR happier with 15mm and plan to stay with it. All my terrain and all my gaming periods have been switched over. Jeff |

No chance. I have 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 1/72, 25mm, 28mm, 32mm and 54mm figs. That doesn't begin to address my Naval or Space miniatures. Each fits a scale or style of game I want to play. Play what you want and enjoy. But thinking others should do the same is a little unusual in this hobby. Thanks, John |

28mm after many years with 25mm. For terrain space I would like to switch to 15mm but I won't as like the detail of 28mm, which permits my soldiers to be minor art forms rather than 15mm representations. |

So what sort of game are we playing here? Playing a battalion/regiment level WWII/Moderns wargame would be a massive undertaking in 28mm, but would work very well at microarmor scale. OTOH, a skirmish game would be wasted playing at 6mm! Of course if you ONLY play ancients skirmish games, and have no interest in any other sort of game, it makes sense to stick to one scale

15mm. Though now that there is so much more available in 6mm

25, 28, 30, 32
whatever they happen to be calling it this week. For larger games, I have larger tables. I have been looking at doing a set of 28 mm WWII ships as well. We have a 7 acre pond on the ranch, and I think that that would just be too much fun (assuming I could figure out the particulars of a game as opposed to just cruising around with 16 foot RC battleship). I do have a collection of 1:72 from the WWI and WWII era – though more often then not I use a friends army in that period (also 1:72). |

25mm. Deal with it. I hate it. I hate "scale creep" in 15mm (not Mark, I mean the issue of) I hate 28mm. What a dumb scale. 25mm. It's what I can see, it's what I work with now. Uf Da. Eric |

15mm mostly with just a few 28mm. |

I have 6mm, 1/285th, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm and 28mm just in ground forces. However I wish I would have picked one (15mm) and stuck with it. But my need to have my own troops for whatever game we're playing has lead to multiple scales, duplication of the same troops in different scales, and way too much lead to ever hope to paint. |

I use different scales for different things. I've tried skirmishing with 15mm figs and don't particularly like it that much. I tried doing Eastern Ren in 10mm and didn't like the lack of detail on the hussars, so moved up to 28mm and that required too much table so finally settled on 15mm and am very pleased. Same with other things, most of my stuff is in 28mm but where it doesn't make sense to do so it is in other scales. I have ECW stuff in 10, 15 and 28mm. I have WWII stuff in 28mm and 15mm (and some in 6mm but I use that for sci-fi) Different periods work best in different scales, lots of cavalry is best done in a smaller scale. For my Carlist War games 28mm is perfect, few battalions in a battle, mostly infantry. The figures are gorgeous. I can't see any reason to do it in a smaller scale. |

I run 2 scales 6mm and 25/28mm (yes i mix them, try and stop me.) |
Allen57 | 07 Dec 2011 11:03 p.m. PST |
I agree with Pictors in part. I use different scales for different things but think that it would be better if I stuck to one scale more due to terrain than anything else. |

I'm too easily distracted by cool toys to commit to any one scale
I like 28mm and 6mm
and spaceships
and thanks to Gruntz I'm starting to get into 15mm, which may become the go-to for middle sized games (several squads and armor). I've got a fair bit of terrain that will work well with any of those. |
Angel Barracks | 08 Dec 2011 2:47 a.m. PST |
6mm. I have only purchased 6mm in the last 6 years. I have played a handful of other sizes but only when they were provided by other people. Michael. |

Started changing over from 25mm to 15mm some 30 years ago, basically on the cost of the figures as I could not afford the prices to get an Ancient Indian army (all those elepants and chariots). Changeover was completed (apart from a few odd display models) 20 years ago. I admit that the quality of 15mm now is vastly superior (in most cases) to what was available then, so some armies have been redone as better and more accurate figures are released. I have no regrets about making the change, as I now have over 40 15mm FOG/DBM armies in my collection, which would have been financial suicide in 25/28mm. Steve |

I currently have toys in 2mm, 6mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm and 54mm, to say nothing of ships in 1/6000 & 1/1200 and aircraft in 1/144 and 1/100. If, however, I had to pick only one, I'd definitely go with 20mm. Or 6mm. Probably. |
infojunky | 08 Dec 2011 3:30 a.m. PST |
I have to say scale appropriate for the game, just because I prefer 15mm for SF Light Infantry/rpg/skirmish, doesn't mean I won't shift down to 6mm for armor and the like. |
Dynaman8789 | 08 Dec 2011 4:58 a.m. PST |
15mm for me. But not religously – I still tinker with 6mm from time to time. All my Vietnam stuff is 6mm, ACW will be as well. |
kallman | 08 Dec 2011 5:43 a.m. PST |
I primarly have 28mm but like others have found 15mm, 10mm, 20mm excellent for if not better for certian periods. It is all matter of what you enjoy. |
Calico Bill | 08 Dec 2011 5:54 a.m. PST |
For me, it depends on what I'm playing. Large battles..6mm. Skirmishes..28mm. Ancients..15mm, Naval..1:2400 scale. |

I think it'd be great if I could pick and stick to one scale
So far, I've had no luck: 6, 12, 15, 20, 25, 28, 40, & 54mm. I think, if I could stick to just one scale it would probably be 15mm
or maybe 54mm, lol! There's just some much well detailed 15mm products available at affordable prices. 54mm has a lot of choice too, although, the costs are significantly higher.I really like 54mm though. My current favourite 54mm products are All the Kings Men. Huh, you know, I guess if I was able to stick with one scale it'd be 54mm. Reminds me of simpler days

28mm for way too many years. I just like the way they paint more than the smaller scale. Maybe someday I'll give 15mm a try only because Kurasian has a sweet line. 8) |

15mm for WWII using FOW and 28mm for WAB and ECW. Enjoy both and even flirted with Warmaster and 10mm a while back but had no time to go very far with it. Variety is the spice of life. |

I regret not choosing a scale and sticking to it. My first wargaming was with 20mm 30 years ago. Since then I have tried 25mm, 6mm, 15mm & 10mm. I have finally settled on 15mm but 20mm would have worked just as well for me and I would now own several usuable armies rather than a number of partially complete projects. |

I used to game with Micro Armour Airfix ACW plastics, and 6 mm Napoleonics. Since joining my current group 15+ years ago I've moved onto 25/28mm, with a smattering of 15mm and 20mm. |

I could live with just 10, but it's not great for skirmish. |
Omemin | 08 Dec 2011 1:17 p.m. PST |
I have 1:2400 ships, 1:1200 ships, 1:600 ships and aircraft, 1:285 armor and aircraft, 15mm for many a period, ditto for 25mm. I hope to do more in 25mm and 28mm in ACW and Ancients/Medievals. It depends on the games you want. 15mm is probably the most versatile scale, does everything from skirmish to mega games. It also has the added advantage of giving you the best chance of finding figures you need and other players. |
