Following on from our first two games (see Maurice – First Game Impressions) we had a crack at a historical refight – you can read it here on my blog: Blenheim 1704: A Maurice Experience.

Very nice and nicely painted armies. It looks like it may be a good system to try out when I finally get back to painting my forces.

Very nice report and I can see that you had plenty of refreshments available – bottles of New Zealand White can I presume?

@Jovian1 – Thanks.

@Lord Raglan – Thanks & actually no – about 70% of it is various varieties of Bordeaux, plus some good Italian Chiantis, and several Spanish Tempranillo's and similar… Remainder is a mix of AU & NZ Reds (mostly Merlot's, Pinot Noir, & Cav-Sav varieties). FWIW I rarely drink white's – I find the NZ Sav-Blancs and Chardonnays and such especially far too sweet for my palate. My favourite wines by far are the earthier French Bourdeauxer (i.e. Merlots, or the blends with Merlot and/or Cab-Franc in), Spanish Tempranillos, & the good Italian Chiantis.

Ah, the true measure of a gamer with taste; not the number of casualties per side, but the amount of empty green coloured bottles or battalions lost.

Salut!

Chianti is a region, not really a variety… not to split hairs. Usually it is a Sangiovese blended with another variety. What makes is a Chianti is where it is grown….

Chianti Classico is from the original region. Others may be called Chianti if they are near the Classico region. Reserva is what you want as it can age well. Regular Chianti may not age well and may turn (vinegar like smell, etc.)

See what happens when you grow up in Tuscany and you have a smart uncle that takes the time to teach you the finer things in life? The wines I had over there that I didn't appreciate…. It is amazing how good wines are over there especially the local varieties that aren't loaded with sulfides. You haven't truly lived until you have had a young wine that is sulfide free….

I am with you on your selections although I can tolerate the sweeter wines to a certain extent. I find Merlots to be on the too "woody" side in general but the finer ones are quite good. I love a good Cabernet and Sangiovese are quite good too. And as you mention, Chianti Riserva is awesome!

Pinots are great white wines. Happy to say my wife's tastes have caught up with mine. She used to drink the sweeter whites. Now she prefers a good Cabernet or a Pinot Grigio (Trentino region please! lol)

Check out Santa Ema from Chile. Someone gave me a bottle. It was dead great and oh so smooth. 2009 vintage and I haven't been able to locate it again yet….

Mycenius

Sounds great, I will be around for a game this weekend.

Sam has asked me to contribute photos of painted 28mm WSS units for the rule-book.

Lovely looking set up. Those buildings are very nice too.

Yeah, quite right @ancientsgamer – you got me – what was I thinking! Yes I was being a bit too general – and yes Chianti Riserva, hhmmm, donuts! Doh! No that's Homer…

Right you are @Lord Raglan – cin cin!

@timurilank – unfortunately right now the gaming space is a bit cramped – so consumption while a game is 'in progress' is a no go – too much risk of 'accidents'! Unfortunately…

P.S. Hopefully next house will be better suited…

Lovely looking set up. Those buildings are very nice too.

Thanks @StanleySteve – they are primarily from Ziterdes in Germany (a division of NOCH), barring the Warlord Games Barn, and the also from Germany ESLO (part of Gelaendestuecke) Animal Enclosure with Stable. The buildings come pre-painted but my mate Kieran (of 6mm Wargaming) spruced them up for me – he's done a damn fine job. He's just working on weathering/blending in a Conflix pre-painted building I picked up which is an excellent match size-wise for the Ziterdes buildings – and along with the Warlord Games Windmill & ESLO Ruined Gothic Church I also have makes a great set that all go together well.

I also have a Ziterdes Manor House (12002), and Cemetery Chapel & Tombs (12730 & 12731), and a couple of smaller Hudson & Allen Medieval style buildings, all awaiting painting to complete my 28mm European 'Horse & Musket' village…

FWIW if it's of interest they are specifically the following Ziterdes Models:

12000 – City House
12003 – Guesthouse
12004 – Cottage Farm
12005 – Farmhouse
12007 – Farm Mill

Ziterdes would be my favourite buildings (and very cost effective) followed closely by Hudson & Allen.

You have some fantastic stuff there, these 28mm WSS French and Danish Regiments – Dipped!!! are looking really nice @Lord Raglan – great work! Where's your index/tags/categories to filter your posts?!

I am envious – wish we already had some WSS stuff painted up for our Maurice games!

P.S. I don't suppose anyone can help with either of these queries?

1. Typical Frontage Occupied by Infantry & Cavalry in the WSS?

2. Best Battlefield Map(s) of Blenheim?
