Here a preview of the Italian version of Smooth&Rifled that will be released in around 1 week. The English version is about ready and we plan to release it before Christmas (or just after).

picture

S&R is a skirmish set covering from about early '700 to early '900 and it is published by Dadi&Piombo.

This first edition of the rulebook will be a 24 pages PDF and will include also 4 basic scenarios.
Cost will be 9 euros or 5.50 for those who have already acquired "SPAM" (the intro version).
By buying the set you will become supporting customer and will receive for free all future PDF editions, as S&R is still a developping project.

With the release of the official version of S&R all army list supplements will be updated and some new are on the workbench, including the ACW, the American Revolution, Darkest Africa and the Boer Wars.

How many figures a side is this for?

Marshal Mark06 Dec 2011 12:28 p.m. PST

Could you tell us a bit more about it ?
Are figures organised into units ?
Are there any command and control rules, such as activation by unit.
Is it IgoUgo ?

How many figures a side is this for?

the game suggests 3 "formats": Small, Medium and Large.
In the "small" format you field a unit of around 10-12 figs (it has a point system so it depends on quality). All figs are taken from the same unit type, for example a unit of Jaeger.

With the Medium you have about the double and you field a "main unit" with support of some additional elements. This is probably the best for a picthed game of an evening.

The Large is aboout 40-60 figs per side with the "right mix" of troops. Probably better for multiplayers games.

The set includes also 4 basic scenarios (designed mainly for the Medium format).

Are figures organised into units ?
Are there any command and control rules, such as activation by unit.
Is it IgoUgo ?

Figs are single based but act within Units. Both single or group move/actions are allowed.
Every Unit (just one in the Small format) has a leader, a sergeant (or equivalent). The officer is optional in small format while it is compulsory in the Medium. With the Large you need to field also a "Superior officer" as CiC.

Activation is a little more complicated to explain. The Unit/Player that wins the initiative is the Active player/unit and has Action Points (AP) to spend (related to dice thrown), the other player can react (reaction is limited and still related to AP), then the sides changes during the second part of the turn and the Active Player becomes the Inactive. And yes if you have spent points for reaction you will have less when you are active.

Hardly you will have enough Action Points to activate everything you field, but the first actions are cheaper than the subsequent (how cheap is related to discipline/drill of troops) so it is up to the player to make the best of his points.
