Did anyone hear about GF9 discontinuing the Econobases? I loved these, and I need some more bases!

Noiseman II28 Nov 2011 3:48 p.m. PST

I've written them about it, but only got a reply saying something to the effect of, 'Thanks for asking'.

I really hope they don't discontinue these as I hate the long waits from Litko. GF9 bases almost always came within 48 hours of ordering rather then the month or more wait from Litko and I actually prefer the material GF9 bases are made of.

I agree. I love those bases. I have ordered loads.

Thanks,

John

I noticed this the other day. I was seriously bummed.

Mad Guru30 Nov 2011 10:34 p.m. PST

Oh, no, say it isn't so…? If they are no longer available, that will really suck.

frankthedm06 Dec 2011 11:14 a.m. PST

Anyone got the link for the notice?

Noiseman II07 Dec 2011 9:37 a.m. PST

There was no notice, just no place to order them on the revamped website.

I emailed a fellow there I ordered some custom-cut bases from a few months ago but got no reply. My email to the general website gave no clue as to the econo-bases fate…

Seriously bummed about this as I've ordered tons of bases through them.

Odd… First thing i think of when a company suddenly clams up on a product so completely is when it involves a legal issue of some kind.

Maybe the way they were laser cutting MDF violated some environmental or OSHA regulations. If that is so, the company probably had an "Oh Crap!" moment and is now pretending econobases never existed.

CorSecEng09 Dec 2011 1:42 p.m. PST

Didn't they just move their entire shop around? Could have broken something or that machine isn't setup yet.

Bryan Stroup09 Dec 2011 3:00 p.m. PST

I'm with CorSecEng on this. With a site revamp and the shop too, they may not want to be taking orders for something they can't deliver until things are set back up again.

At least I'm hoping so as I've got an order ready to go for them as well.

Seems like I remember them saying something to that effect on the old site before it went down.

Here's hoping!

If they make a formal announcement about shutting it down then we might be able to do it. I have made contact with a new local laser cutter that will let me do it for probably similar prices.

I finally got an answer from GF9:

"Thank you for your product question. The econo and custom product ranges are temporarily offline while we make some in-house adjustments. We are working to have those products available again in the near future as they are quite popular items."

Great news – I LOVE those bases!!!

frankthedm20 Dec 2011 3:45 p.m. PST

Good to hear! Love the things and it is pretty easy to split them on their sides to get 2 or 3 bases out of one.

Glad to hear it! I was going to ask who else makes MDF laser cut bases, but now I'll just wait.

Kealios01 Feb 2012 3:13 p.m. PST

Still nothing on their website about these :(

Jay Wirth Fezian07 Mar 2012 12:08 p.m. PST

Renaissance Ink also has the 1/8" masonite bases by the Qt. priced cheaper than GF9. Check the web site renaissanceink.net or see us at an East Coast show.

I've bought bases for multiple systems from warbases.co.uk and am very happy with them.

Karl von Hessen13 Mar 2012 4:31 p.m. PST

chrisrivers, GF9's Economy (Masonite) bases were sold at Cold Wars by Battlefront Miniatures USA Inc.(I bought 2 qts!).

I remembered you and got an email address for ya!
Contact Joe Krone at FlamesOfWar.com or pm me for a phone number (don't knbow if we're allowed to post them here)at cjaklic AT verizon DOT net

frankthedm,

Do you have a method of splitting these bases in two you could share? When I tried I got two pices that weren't very "regular" (thick at one end thin at another or all 4 corners being different thicknesses…a real mess).

Thanks for any advice

Carl

I recently ordered a couple of Qts from Renaissance Ink, and Jay is right – great service, great bases, and great price.

Cut with sharp X-acto blade along multiple sides of the base. You'll probably have to start new cuts as one single cut will 'travel' making the slice uneven.

If the base is too soft, apply while glue and sand in multiple layers to stiffen.

They just lost a sale because of this. :( The whole point of the order would have been a pint each of 20mm and 25mm bases, with a few things to round out the order.

I see that this topic dates back to March – we are now into July, with no Econobases in sight or on site.

Damned shame – I like those bases.

If you have anyone in your area going to Historicon,Renn Ink's bases will be sold there. Not sure who will be selling them ,but the folks from Renn Ink passed that on to me in an e-mail a few weeks ago.

Anyone here know why litko has such a huge upcharge on oval & pill bases?

Found out warbases.co.uk offer bases similar to econobases. Price seems decent, even with shipping to the US. They will do custom order bases for sizes not listed too. I'll post again when i have my bases in hand.

just thought I would share this to make everyone sick…one of the products that come into the warehouse I work at has the masonite sheets as dividers. Some are 4 foot squares, some are 4 foot by 6 foot .It is the same masonite use for the econo bases….and it is thrown away at the end of the day.I wish I knew someone who had a laser cutter..I could get this stuff for free just to carry it off and not got onto the scrap trailer.

Got my bases from warbases.co.uk. The material is a lighter colour MDF than GF9 used to use, but it smells exactly the same so it is probably made with the same Formaldehyde resins we know and love. The lips of the bases have some burrs that are easily removed.

I got the thicker 3mm, because as mentioned previously, I split the MDF bases to double or sometime triple the amount of bases i get.

Here are what mine looked like. Bottom right corner shows one of the 60mm bases i have already split and sealed with light brown PVA.

When splitting, put cuts along the edge of the base to the center. For really large bases, use a disposable box cutter with extending blade. Chances are the cuts will not align perfectly, but that should not be a big problem. Once you have cut the base all the way around, pull it apart.

Here is a video of the base being pulled apart after the cut.

Once separated, PVA glue the fuzzy [and toxic] loose wood fibers. I tend to glue down the loose flaps of wood fibers since they add nice texture to the base top.
