Looking for a book which would appeal to a 14 year old.
Color plates, maps, explinations of the different forces and battles.

Cheers

Napoleon: The Last Campaigns, 1813-15 by James Lawford. You should be able to find a used copy on Amazon. When I found that book at the library in the late 70's, that started my love affair with this era. When I started my own collection, that was one of the first books I purchased.

Second the Rothenburg. Last Campaigns is a good read but a bit dated – little color and quite narrow in scope.

Henry Lachouque: Waterloo.

Plenty of plates with paintings of the battle. Nice and simple text. My first book on Waterloo (however, I was 16 then).

'Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars' by Digby Smith cover what you are looking for. It gives a reasonable introduction and includes lots of colour plates.

For a fourteen year old, I'd suggest an Osprey 'Campaign' title on whatever Napoleonic campaign interested him. If that was a success, then follow up with other Osprey books on the appropriate armies/uniforms.

I think you're asking for too much from one book!

The titles already mentioned are good for that age range but you could also consider The Napoleonic Source Book by Philip Haythornthwaite. Unfortunatley, there are no colour plates but it is packed with masses of black and white images and contains a considerable amount of info on battles, campaigns and the various armies invloved. And it is not a heavy read.

The only problem is that you might not be able to obtain a new copy unless you are willing to pay a high price. But the last time I looked, Caliver Books were offering a good second hand copy for around ten pounds, plus postage. And the titles are usually in good condition from Caliver.

I always ask for too much from one book (but I's keeps tryin'!)

Many thanks for the feedback.
