We got the prototypes for the new fence system in and have been playing with them.

Not sure if we are going to include the rods with the set. We will provide all the plastruct and K&S engineering part numbers that work with it. So far we have tried brass, styrene, and the florescent green acrylic.

I think it's a good idea not to provide the crossbeams. People who want a more advanced sci-fi wall can use the fluorescent acrylic, and anyone going for the Terra Nova look could use actual wood dowels.

What an excellent idea!

I think that just selling the posts and corner units is the best way to go. That way, we can source our own rods and it will keep costs down.

I am looking forward to the 28mm version :).

nice

I'd like it if you sold the rods, and even more if you provided multiple options (transparent vs. not transparent, for example).

Looks good, have you considered Bamboo skewers?

Sell the rods for those that want to buy them: it's not always easy to source material of the right diameter, especially in a metric/imperial world

I like those alot! I also agree with everyone about offering the rods.

Mako1127 Nov 2011 5:19 p.m. PST

Looks good!

I imagine those glowing rods will keep the guy on guard duty alert, since if he dozes off, he'll be fried like a mosquito in a bug zapper.

I can hear the sizzling now……

We can do the rods as well but they will be only out of acrylic. I don't have a good enough source for the small diameter brass to offer that. We will probably sell two different sets one with and one without. I'll also list some major manufactures part numbers that work.

Now to figure out how to cut 8 small diameter acrylic rods at one time…

BTW does the UK have different sources for hobby styrene and metals? I can look up compatible numbers for those companies as well.

Plastic cut off wheel

and a anchor jig…perhaps a pair of your supports and cut the edge right along the outer line of one of the supports?

Mako1127 Nov 2011 7:10 p.m. PST

A laser cutter would work nicely, I would think, and permit a whole bunch of them to be done in batches, with one pass.

28mmMan27 Nov 2011 7:24 p.m. PST

High grade plastics cutting wheel is $10.

How much is laser cutter?

If they are less expensive since the last time I researched them I would love to pick one up; average laser cutter was $2 USD,00 for a micro cutter.

Our existing jig for the Omni-Stand stuff will work fine. Its attached to a 2" cutoff saw from Micro-Mark. Good little saw. It needs to see some PM every once in a while but I guess most people don't use it as much as I do.

The problem is getting all of the rods the same length. I think I can cut them all at the same time with some special modifications. If I cut 8 at a time then they are all the same length and reduces production time. + or – a mm will matter for this one. We have a bit more leg room with the Omni-Stands.

I generally use a fine tooth blade for plastics and aluminum. I have some plastic abrasive wheels but they tend to melt instead of cut.

Looking forward to spending money on these.

Would it be possible to include slightly larger towers, so I can get a heavy weapon and two guys up there, or so?

CorSecEng27 Nov 2011 10:55 p.m. PST

Larger towers will probable be in the gatehouse when I figure out how to do that. Terra Nova uses a pully system to just raise some of the bars. I might make one section that is pulled up like that. Gets tricky with the holes so close together. Things tend to snap.

Things get interesting when you can really only use a 2D plane. Might do something that lifts up like a draw bridge. Still thinking about it.

The Larger towers will probably use the same attachment system as the small ones so they can be interchanged. Might also do a rampart section but that will be hard stabilize. You'll need fender washers on each base to keep it upright.

Looking really good.
