Salut,

I would like to share news that may interest some of you. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the 1812-1814 campaigns, I launched, in collaboration with the Napoleonic Society of Georgia, a new series of publication that will make Russian memoirs, diaries and other primary sources available for the first time to English-speaking audience.

In light of the dearth of material on the Russian side of the war, I think there is a need for primary material that readers can evaluate and analyze for themselves. So starting in October, I began publishing publish a series of volumes that will feature English translations of Russian primary sources. To make them inexpensive and affordable, these will not be fancy publications – each title will be a professionally produced soft cover publication with limited auxiliary material (illustrations, maps). Below is the list of the first few volumes that will be published over the next year:

1. Pavel Pushin, Diaries of the 1812-1814 Campaigns (published)
2. Ilya Radozhitskii, The Campaign Memoirs of the Artilleryman: Part 1 – 1812 (will be published in December)
3. Alexey Yermolov, Memoirs of the Napoleonic Wars (published)
4. Moritz von Kotzebue, Russian Prisoner of War among the French (will be published in December)
5. The Battle of Borodino: A History in Documents (Spring 2012)
6. Yakov Otroshenko, Memoirs of the Napoleonic Wars (Spring 2012)
7. Ivan Zhirkevich, Memoirs of the Napoleonic Wars (Spring 2012)
8. Alexander Mikhailovskii-Danilevskii, Diary of the 1813 Campaign (Summer 2012)

I hope you will find these titles of interest. They can be obtained at link
as well as at major online book sellers (i.e. Amazon).

Let me know if you have any suggestions ;)

Best wishes,
Alex

What can you recommend? I am looking for firsthand accounts of how Russian officers commanded the men in their unit. What was the daily routine like and why? How did they maintain discipline and how and what were they trained? How well provided were they in as many categories possible (food,, clothing, physical demands placed upon the men, ammunition, horses, etc.)

Which of your offerings best address these issues. I'll take one

Good luck in this venture. Understanding the Russian army by having such in english for comparison has been next to impossible for us non-Russian speaking crowd. Thanks for making this happen.

I'm already attracted to No 2. That'll definitely go on my to-buy list.

But would I be right in thinking that it would not really be worth considering buying Number 3-Memoirs of Alexy Yermolov, if you already owned the Hardback 'Czar's General'?

And would you recommend any of the titles that might mention of any of the following actions – the August and November actions at Krasnoi and Polotsk, and the action on the Berezina? I would not expect too much detail but a page or two would be nice.

Thanks everyone. Tom, Pushin's diaries contain many details that you are seeking so you might check it out. Radozhitskii's memoir is well written and much easier to read and has great details on camp life.

Gazzola, No 3. is indeed a paperback edition of "Czar's General" If you are interested in the Berezina, my forthcoming book "The Russian Eyewitness of the 1812 Campaign" (will be released in the UK and US in the summer 2012) features long excerpts from memoirs of Czaplic, Arnoldi, Langeron, Rochechouart, Zotov and Malinovskii.

Best wishes,
Alex

Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out for that one.

And it looks like next year is going to be another bumper year for Napoleonic titles.

I was an avid buyer of Napoleonic books years ago.

I am just starting to get back in to the hobby.

Congratulations on your fine efforts, to fill in much needed information.

I hope to buy one or 2 of your books soon.
