I saw the 15mm resin OGRE kit from awhile back, but I figure my chances of getting one of those are close enough to zero that I may as well forget it. However, I do have an Akuyaku 1 tank kit. And looking at this page here: link with some shots of a completed hull without the other greeblies attached, dang if that thing doesn't look like it could be some variant of a Mark I OGRE. Leave the central tower on or off, make the two circular things in the back into missile pods
close enough! Thoughts or suggestions? |

I think you could do better than a MKI with it. It is pretty big
I would go with a non-articulated MKIII I think.
Here is a MKIII with some 15mm infantry for scale (and to rub in that I have one, hehehehe):

It's not that big a deal. I had one and sold it at a profit. Not too disgusting a profit of course. I don't miss it. |

The Akuyaku tank does look good if you into that steam punk or WWI look to your Sci-fi games, i think there are a few members here on the TMP board who actually already have and game with them. |

I like the painted MK III above, and the RAFM troopers with it. It shouldn't be that hard to make them from scratch, with a bit of high-density foam, foam board, or even blocks of wood, and a bit of modeling skill. Add detailing with the foamcore, styrene, cardboard, etc. Treads and bogies appear to be the most challenging part, but you can probably just use stand-ins for them. I think I'd look at the Star Wars Sand Crawler to start, for each of the four tracked pods, but other things like tank treads and running gear could probably be used too. Anyone got a nice chart of the various Ogre Marks, for a side-by-side comparison of them, to use as a reference? |

While the Akuyaku tank is very cool and well made, it does have that retro science look. The OGREs are much more ultra-modern boxy type design. To jump start a project you could always use a large scale model, but what about trying a toy tank as a discount start. I have one of these set aside to make a super tank for 15mm: auction And here is a lot with two, for that OGRE feel: auction There are plenty of smaller tanks still made: link link link link Then you can build up a super-structure out of foamcore or plastic card. |
dragon6 | 19 Nov 2011 8:07 p.m. PST |
I think I'd prefer to build the superstructure out of styrene. It looks like it's simple box shapes. Add the running gear from some of those cheap Green Army Men tanks. The big spinal guns might be replaced by some of Combat Wombats gun barrels? Some of them seem to have that shape. I don't know what you would use for the primary in front. The missiles I think you could find. CPT Jake has given you some great pictures. Perhaps he has more close ups? |

The OGREs are much more ultra-modern boxy type design. Hmm, I love the Ogres as much as the next guy who started gaming in the 70s, but I'm not sure I'd call them ultra-modern in appearance, at least not anymore. They do have that 70s look to them. Still love them of course! I had toyed with the idea of making some sort of smaller mark of a BOLO-like thing, but trying to make it more in tune with modern tech expectations. Of course the Dictator has its roots in that sort of mega-vehicle. Not sure it'd be worth it to go much bigger than that -- as it is the Dictator and DPLS are very slow sellers, even though I priced them as close to the bone as possible. If you're going to make something really huge you've got to make it for the 40k crowd as they are already used to shelling out hundreds of dollars for a model! |

? Who made that 15mm Ogre and when? O.o
|
Battle Miniatures Emporium | 20 Nov 2011 12:17 a.m. PST |
Jon that is why I am only going to do little cute stuff like Bikes and Tanks. If a guy like you is having slow sales, on his BIG Models, then I would be better off keeping my money going into my monsters and other figures for now. |
Parzival | 20 Nov 2011 10:40 a.m. PST |
I think dragon6 has the right idea-- build your own. The Ogre is all basic shapes and mostly flat surfaces. Pen parts could be used for barrels or even missile cones, and the rounded turret could probably be built either out of pingpong balls or plastic spheres sold as make-your-own Christmas ornaments, depending on the size you need. The tread wheels could be from a toy tank, or possibly spools, buttons, or hardware parts. |
DyeHard | 20 Nov 2011 10:47 a.m. PST |
Exactly: Beyond the tracks and wheels, the rest can be put together pretty simply because it is so simple in surface treatment. That was my point with the term "Ultra-modern" You know I do not just make these things up. "Ultra-Modern" is a particular style. It does not just mean "up to date" or current. See this google image search under the term: link Sort of, composed of fundamental solid shapes with smooth sides and little or no ornamentation. A lot of people do not like "ultra-modern" because it looks dated, old fashion now. I.e. not covered in bolt heads, vents, turrets and guns, grooves ridges bumps and the like. The smooth cube and sphere are the most "ultra-modern". Being of an age, I too feel nostalgic for the OGRE, like the original starship Enterprise, or the sets for "Space 1999". Nostalgic for that old Ultra Modern look. |

Psyckosama I don't have the gents name I do know it was a extremely limited run of models, that sold out rather quickly. They were produced without license thus the small run as Steve Jackson is agressive with his IP, and became aware of them
. With that what other OGRE-verse vehicles would y'all like to see as physical models? (Note I had a front row seat for one companies attempt at this project for 28mm, whose master of the GEV was far better than the GEV that SJG produced, Steve has definite vision of his look and it is pretty cartoony in 3D) |
nvdoyle | 20 Nov 2011 7:29 p.m. PST |
what other OGRE-verse vehicles would y'all like to see as physical models? Um
yes?
Zandris IV's 'not-Ogre' armor units would look good in 15mm. As far as the original Ogre designs, I'd like to see models more like the non-counter art. The PE GEV was lower had a broader skirt, among other things. |
jfleisher | 20 Nov 2011 8:53 p.m. PST |
I'd love to see more Ogre minis done in 15mm
and I would pretty much sell organs to get one of those 15mm Mark III's
|
28mmMan | 20 Nov 2011 9:13 p.m. PST |
My gut instinct was to look up tank models to convert into a huge Ogre like if not Ogre machine
and it struck me, I really don't like the Ogre designs. They are dated. So there is a certain nostalgia to them, like most designs and pop art from the 70's. I can look back and appreciate the art and such, but most are dated and are odd to my eye
today. As with most things after 25-30+yrs there is a chance for depreciation. I loved Thundarr the Barbarian when it first came out. Tons of fond memories
I watched every episode recently and wished I had not. Yikes. It is terrible. I can appreciate what it was, but I can not watch it today the same way. Now Johnny Quest
still watches the same. So it is not across the board. So the idea of a gigantic tank, an absolutely massive vehicle for use on a 15mm game board is appealing for that holy mother of all that is whole moment when it lumbers onto the board
but the idea of spending the time to build said monster of limited use is daunting enough
but that design
is it just me or could the design use a bit of refreshing? |

"Sure
but then it wouldn't be an Ogre would it?" It was not my intent to offend, I was not talking about a complete redesign but rather a update
that is what I meant by refresh :) ***** These, as noted by JBR are right along the lines I was thinking
|
28mmMan | 21 Nov 2011 9:02 a.m. PST |
Though the central gun could use a bit of the old main gun
that key focal point should be fitted into any new design IMO. :) |

Those are not refreshes though, they are MKI and MKII OGREs
Here is what they look like primed:

The retro look is part of the idea, as it is going to be a Quar OGRE. I'm taking the Quar in a somewhat non-canon direction
|
DyeHard | 22 Nov 2011 11:37 a.m. PST |
Well! For the Quar, the Akuyaku 1 tank is about perfect. It would not surprise me that the original cartoon of the Akuyaku 1 tank was not somewhat of an inspiration for the Quar. Now the question becomes which Quar. The 15mm Quar are very small, I have not done the side by side with the pig like crew of the Akuyaku 1 tank with the Quar, but I would say the Quar come up to about their shoulder. [A head shorter] Sadly I do not have any larger Quar, but I do not think they could squeeze through that hatch of the side. Here is a photo shoot I did many years ago: link Those are Frontier 15mm Boxer Rebellion figures for size reference. (That are about the same size and heft as Old Glory) P.S. Another cool feature which might not show is that the Akuyaku 1 tank has a telescoping mask the can extend from the top. |
Rottenlead | 23 Nov 2011 3:32 a.m. PST |
I like the retro look and think something with that box angular look would be great if they were made more readily available for 15mm. |
