Thanks Chris for endeavouring to bring some clarity to this. Though I ended up becoming mesmerised by the Waterloo clip. I don't know who's idea it was to use wargames figures to illustrate the formations but it works well. Max |

Thanks for the comments! All of the pics, etc
are items I've collected over the years to try and make some sense of it all. What it basically boils down to is Mass! Plus Napoleon & his commanders excellent use of skirmishing tactics and artillery. Probably more research needs to be done on the use of Cavalry in the mix as well. I was just trying mainly here to figure out infantry tactics. I think it also has to do with the scale/size of the units too. A Battalion seems a lot easier to comprehend for me than the massive Division sized elements. Cheers, Chris PS: Lot's more to come, Stay tuned! |

That is very impressive – especially after getting burnt down, which I hope you are recovering from now. One thing I would like to add is prompted by mention of Volley & counter charge in defence. Maybe it was Oman who termed it a 'British' tactic, not sure; but it wasn't it was a universal 18thC tactic. Just that only British organised troops (including Germans & Portuguese) managed to pull it off frequently enough in the Napoleonic era. What it was was a high stress tactic, rather like lying down till needed, or deploying from column to return fire. High stress tactics need a sufficiency of quality command in the right places. A look at the distribution and numbers of officer, senior NCOs in the different formations and nations shows quite direct co-relation between that and tactics that worked well for each of them. That also works all the way up the chain and a comparison of the distinct appointments and ordered roles in a Prussian Brigade post 1812 with the vagueness of 1806 is also noticeable. Looking forward to more of your work. Jeff Lewis |
