Of possible interest why General Garibaldi wear a read shirt as uniform.

"The red shirts were taken by Garibaldi for the first time in Uruguay in 1843, even before General Giuseppe Garibaldi became famous in Italy. It was with the support of Francis Anzani while leading the Italian Legion at Montevideo at the defense of this city agaist Argentine Supreme Director Juan Manuel de Rosas.

Unlike the French Legion, the Italians have few resources and having to adopt a uniform, Francis Anzani was able to find a load of red coats which became from local butchers work clothes and that remain unsold because of the siege and the scarcity of meat.

Back in Italy, after the famous battle of San Antonio del Salto (February 8th, 1846), Garibaldi continued to use the red uniform, a color very unusual for those days , a little "for luck", a little " because he believed that the red (blood) color induce fear to the enemy.
Here is a collection of uniforms Garibaldi photographed at the Civic Museum of Risorgimento of Brescia and the Central Museum of the Risorgimento in Rome."
