I've always loved the Heath Robinson-esque 'Bob Semple' tank from WW2. Here's a lovely model of it at the National Army Museum at Waiouru in New Zealand:

I found this photo, by one Dave Homewood, on the following web forum (which also includes lots more great photos from the New Zealand National Army Museum):

I think this tank would also be perfect for Victorian Science Fiction, with just the addition of a funnel or two!!!

Wonderful model and pic. Thanks for posting.

An incredible machine and possibly the least useful tank ever conceived and actually built. Thank goodness no one ever had to see action in one.

I do hope Bob was a better Minister of Public Works than he was a tank designer. Mind you, if he wasn't, it could explain a great deal about the NZ road network.

There was an article on the 'Bob Semple' in Military Modelling probably around 25 years ago. From memory, a US observer (military attache?) viewing one was told by either Bob or someone else in authority something like "Don't laugh. It's an American design" …

Have a great day, FPR

You would need corrugated plasticard and a bulldozer.

Very similar to the Odessa tank from the Soviet Union…don't knock the Semple -consider what the Japs were using….

The Odessa defense vehicle was christened N.I., abbreviated from the Russian "Na Ispug!" meaning that they were supposed to make the enemy run away "By Fright!"

An appropriate abbreviation for the Semple Tank might have been W.T.F. No translation needed, hopefully.
