Do you play Spartan Games' The Uncharted Seas fantasy naval wargame?

* yes, all the time
* yes, often
* yes, occasionally
* yes, once or twice
* no
* not any more
* never heard of it

Angel Barracks02 Nov 2011 9:03 a.m. PST

no

dandiggler02 Nov 2011 9:08 a.m. PST

No but haven't really had an opportunity to. Looks fun, I liked Man O War back in the day, so I'll give it a shot at some point.

Goober02 Nov 2011 9:21 a.m. PST

Yes, once or twice.

Chris Palmer02 Nov 2011 9:22 a.m. PST

C. Yes, occasionally. .

bruntonboy02 Nov 2011 9:25 a.m. PST

Yes, its our regular family game and has started to appear frequently on club nigts too as more fleets appear. It's lightweight and as silly as all fantasy games are but fun and easy to pick up and not too expensive to buy/collect. What is there not to like?

jpattern202 Nov 2011 9:30 a.m. PST

No, but I bought some of the ships for Man O' War.

chuck05 Fezian02 Nov 2011 9:31 a.m. PST

not any more

No, Fantasy does not appeal.

highlandcatfrog02 Nov 2011 9:37 a.m. PST

No, ditto what Shagnasty said.

Dynaman878902 Nov 2011 9:45 a.m. PST

Yes, once.

Would play it again but have no intention of buying minis for it.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP02 Nov 2011 9:59 a.m. PST

Nope, no intrest in it.

Yes, occasionally

Yes, miniatures are very reasonably priced and well sculpted. Kids really enjoy it too.
Litko stuff for it is nice.

nazrat02 Nov 2011 10:17 a.m. PST

Nope. Tried it and found it to be bland and nowhere near as good as Man o' War, which I still play occasionally and have almost all the fleets for. I also think the US models are utterly mediocre.

Steve Johnson02 Nov 2011 10:22 a.m. PST

Yes, occasionally.

Paintbeast02 Nov 2011 10:54 a.m. PST

Not any more.

I still have all my ships, but I only break them out if the kids specifically ask me to….and that hasn't happened in over a year.

Jovian102 Nov 2011 11:33 a.m. PST

No, I do play Dystopian Wars however!

ancientsgamer02 Nov 2011 11:38 a.m. PST

Probably should add that "Would play if others played near me" to the list of answers.

Looks like a good game and I LOVED Man O' War from GW. I still have all of my GW stuff by the way but I did not get the supplemental rules with the leviathans.

Can anyone chime in as to how the play compared to the GW game? Wasn't GW going to re-release the game in the near future but at a larger scale?

SeattleGamer02 Nov 2011 5:02 p.m. PST

No.

I would LOVE to have a fantasy naval game, with cool ships of many varied designs, and quirky/unique abilities for the various races. Like, oh … say Man O War.

Uncharted Seas has (IMHO) uninteresting ships, with almost no variety within a fleet, and limited "fantasy" aspects.

Battle Phlox02 Nov 2011 5:34 p.m. PST

Yes I play it about once a month. It has a really nice rule set and models.

Space Monkey02 Nov 2011 5:58 p.m. PST

Same goes for me…
I'd like something like a cross between Heart Of Oak and Song Of Blades And Heroes…
though… really… I'd just like some nice fantasy ship proxy minis to play Man O War with.

Calico Bill02 Nov 2011 8:46 p.m. PST

Yes, occasionally. I'd like to play it more often. Cool ships and great rules that could easily be expanded.

Martin03 Nov 2011 9:41 a.m. PST

yes, once or twice but need to play more

Agreed.

Aside from ridden flying monsters and ships built around huge magical weaponry (which means most of Chaos), there is already enough variety to proxy a lot of US into a lot of MoW.

brass103 Nov 2011 10:15 a.m. PST

Have the rules but haven't added any ships to the lead mountain. I'm unimpressed by the ship models anyway.

Farstar03 Nov 2011 10:56 a.m. PST

unimpressed by the ship models

Aesthetic, detail, or quality of cast? The only aesthetic issue I've had is that the Imperial Humans keep their sails in the oddest arrangements, and the Elf ships are… odd. The rest are just fine, other than a general lack of blaringly GW-esque High Fantasy trappings.

Willtij03 Nov 2011 12:04 p.m. PST

No, don't have the Uncharted Money to buy it.

SeattleGamer03 Nov 2011 4:13 p.m. PST

The models are lame (IMHO) due to aesthetics …

I look at the dwarf ships and see the same shape and basic design for every ship, with mostly the same details, just more of them the larger they get. Ironclads from the American Civil War, with smokestacks to the rear.

Or my beloved Orcs, which have the same hull design, same deck details mostly, same sail pattern, they just get wider.

Seems like there should be one brutish ship for boarding actions, filled with crew. One with a catapult for launching flaming whatnot. A narrow ship (and here US has one) that is designed for speed … and ramming!

No two ship classes should look the same. In other words, a cruiser should look like a larger destroyer, and a battleship just a larger cruiser

I grant you, modern ship designs all have a similar hull, bridge superstructure, turrets in all the usual places, etc. But this is FANTASY. MOW had a nice variety of ships within nations (for the most part).

It looks like US created one ship design for each nation, and then made small changes to become other classes of ship.

I'm glad others love the game, and I wish Spartan Games well. But nothing about the game has any WOW! factor for me. Too much cookie-cutter sameness in the models.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP03 Nov 2011 5:28 p.m. PST

Noop.

Space Monkey03 Nov 2011 5:51 p.m. PST

The designs are just too damn bland… won't cut it for the kind of wackness MOW thrives on. Not that the MOW sculpts were all that great… but they were fun and had variety.

Also, I hate resin and refuse to buy it.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer04 Nov 2011 6:32 a.m. PST

not yet, but I want to do a naval game, and any of the historical period naval games, genres etc leave me cold as I find it all too bland and boring. thus I may well give it a go, that or dystopian wars.

Similar thoughts – quite liked some of the models but all the fantasy elements in the ship descriptions just translated into very similar things in game terms.

You'd get something like the fluff says :
"flame lance cannon which raws on the demonic poer of Ooomph the unweildy which can blast through steel as if it were paper and…"

the game effect : same as every other main weapon – roll 4-6 on a D6 to do 2 points of damage (or whatever).

Kind of destroys the fantasy.

Grand Duke Natokina04 Nov 2011 12:21 p.m. PST

Not really a naval gamer, so no.

Greenfield Games06 Nov 2011 8:59 a.m. PST

Not any more.

I had a little fun with it when it first came out but I just found it to be a little limited. It's not a bad game at all but if you like naval combat there are better games out there. I moved on to Victory at Sea and Trafalgar. Dystopian Wars looks like a step in the right direction, though.

evilleMonkeigh10 Nov 2011 5:23 a.m. PST

Buckets of dice-style bland rules, and the ship designs are pretty vanilla.

Have some Firestorm Armada ships though which I use for other purposes.
