What is your favorite quote or scene from the movie?

Favorite scene: Napoleon and the mob walking up the stairs and the aristocrats all trying to get in his favor. "Sir we are so glad your back!"

Favorite quote: "Does Wellington have nothing else to offer than these barbarians"

Dances with Clydesdales29 Oct 2011 11:31 a.m. PST

After ordering the recall for the Scots Greys, the bugler kept blowing recall. Christopher Plummer (ie. Wellington)says something like "Stop that infernal noise…….You'll hurt yourself"

21eRegt29 Oct 2011 11:55 a.m. PST

One of my favorite scenes and quotes: "That may be be, but we'll match them with our lancers." And the Polish lancers drop the tips of their lances…

"I do not care to run around like a wet hen. There'll be plenty of time, sir. Plenty of time."

advocate29 Oct 2011 12:04 p.m. PST

Don't know if it's from the film, but:
"By gad sir, I've lost my leg!"
"By gad sir, so you have!"
always makes me wince.

'But Mama…you chose such big ones…'

Clovis Sangrail29 Oct 2011 12:41 p.m. PST

Wellington has the best lines:

"General have better things to do that shoot at each other"

"I do not care to run around like a wet hen. There'll be plenty of time, sir. Plenty of time."

Lord Uxbridge: "Er-herm. Sir."
Duke of Wellington: [removing his copy of The Times from over his face] "Ah, Uxbridge."
Lord Uxbridge: "As I am second in command and in case anything should happen to you, what are your plans?"
Duke of Wellington: "To beat the French."

"I don't know what they'll do to the enemy; but, by God, they frighten me."

"If there is anything in this world about which I know positively nothing, it is agriculture."

That said you have to love Field Marshal Gebhard von Blucher: "Raise high the black flags, my children. No prisoners. No pity. I will shoot any man I see with pity in him."

"We need four hours. The ground is too soft, I cannot move my cannon"

"The Prussians are here. Blucher is in the woods".

Dynaman878929 Oct 2011 1:36 p.m. PST

Although I really did like the movie, all I can remember of it is an endless bunch of scenes with soldiers marching – and I think there was a cavalry charge too…

Oh, and that dreadful private stepping out of line to bemoan the fighting. I guess that would not count as a favorite.

John Armatys29 Oct 2011 1:37 p.m. PST

It has got to be the highland dancing and "but mama, you chose such big ones".

andygamer29 Oct 2011 1:50 p.m. PST

Next time steal a goat, Paddy, and they'll make you a sergeant.

(Actually, all of that scene. "Be quiet and I'll only eat half of ya." "You, sir!" "Me, sir?" "You, sir, remove your pack… open it." etc.)

cavcrazy29 Oct 2011 1:56 p.m. PST

"Good beans Wellington"

"I'll bring him back to Paris in an iron cage"…….Man I love this movie!

arthur181529 Oct 2011 2:41 p.m. PST

Wellington, on being told Napoleon is being cheered by his troops and it being suggested he should ride down his lines to boost morale: 'I don't need a white horse to puff me, by God!'

MadDrMark29 Oct 2011 2:50 p.m. PST

The overhead shot of the cavalry charge on the British squares is still utterly jaw-dropping, even in this era of CGI. I show it to my classes every year, and it amazes me each time I see it.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP29 Oct 2011 3:35 p.m. PST

After discovering a pig in a private's knapsack and listening to his excuses, Wellington says, "Make that man a corporal as he knows how to defend an impossible position."

Grizzlymc29 Oct 2011 3:47 p.m. PST

"Why sir, to beat the French of course"

Maxshadow29 Oct 2011 4:45 p.m. PST

"Give night or give me Blucher!"
But the movie is realy choc a block with great quotes.
They just keep coming.

Captain Gideon29 Oct 2011 5:48 p.m. PST

I've got a few:

Napoleon upon seeing the Highlanders-
Has Wellington nothing to offer me but these Amazons

Napoleon talking to Ney after seeing the Prussians-
But as far as you're concerned and the Army they're on the Moon is that understood

Napoleon talking to Ney
This Wellington wages war in a new way he fights sitting on his ass, well we'll have to move him off it

Napoleon to some of his staff near the end of the film-
I was in this position before at the Battle of Marengo,I lost the Battle at five o'clock but I won it back again at seven

Captain Gideon

"Good beans Wellington"
"If there is one thing I know absolutely nothing about sir, it is agriculture"

This is my favourite scene and line too. I actually use it a fair amount when I'm on cases in hospitals.

Old Bear30 Oct 2011 2:18 a.m. PST

What's that Gideon… can't even bear to quote Old Nosey in the movie? I bet you fast forward all his scenes, don't you? wink

nsolomon9930 Oct 2011 2:40 a.m. PST

" … still, 16,000 Prussian dead, thats good news to slap on the walls of Paris … "

bracken30 Oct 2011 2:46 a.m. PST

I like the bit when Wellington is told napoleon is in range of the guns ! His reply is great ! Exact wording I can't remember but its along the lines of it ain't commanders job to fire on other commanders !

Stavka30 Oct 2011 3:28 a.m. PST

Duchess of Richmond on seeing a muddy and weary General Muffling enter the room:

"That gentleman will spoil the dancing".

Ney: "The Cossacks are watering their horses in the Seine"

I don't know why, but that line stuck it my head as a kid when I first watched the movie years ago.

welly181530 Oct 2011 3:39 a.m. PST

Ponsonby …. my father poor fellow , he was killed by the French

julianmizzi30 Oct 2011 4:13 a.m. PST

Out you get hooky you done your bit….. (wrong movie doh)

Ney as he leads the cuirassiers off down the hill ….

Milhaud are you with me …….

(Milhaud laughing ) Yes sir………..

Then i fast forward coz its depressing.

Enry MItchell30 Oct 2011 4:20 a.m. PST

anything not by Rod Steiger – the chair in which he sits is less wooden.

The "amazons" line actually makes me want to stick pins in my eyes.

Maxshadow30 Oct 2011 4:52 a.m. PST

Rod Steiger, Christopher Plummer,Orson Welles, Jack Hawkins et al the whole cast did a very convincing job didn't they?

Stavka30 Oct 2011 5:28 a.m. PST

Not sure about that. Rod Steiger tended to shift accents throughout the movie, although when good he was very good.

I always thought Jack Hawkins seemed less than convincing, but found later that he had lost his larynx to cancer in the mid-sixties. That may explain the raspy voice, but I read that his performances after the operation were largely dubbed by other actors. He died a few years after Waterloo was released.

Although the actor playing the Duke of Brunswick was clearly the strong, silent type. I imagine he was a Russian extra, perhaps.

I actually prefer the scenes before the battle- better acting. Once the battle starts I usually lose interest.

skinkmasterreturns30 Oct 2011 5:39 a.m. PST

"Don't hurry yourself,Pic…"

Clovis Sangrail30 Oct 2011 6:26 a.m. PST

Jack Hawkins did learn to talk again, but his voice was dubbed by Charles Grey.

cavcrazy30 Oct 2011 7:38 a.m. PST

"I've never seen guns move so smoothly"

"You'll learn the art of war from the French"

"They will chain you like Prometheus ro a rock"

Captain Gideon30 Oct 2011 9:30 a.m. PST

To finish a few of these lines-

"Don't hurry yourself Pic,my lad will hold them aye till you come"

"They will chain you like Prometheus to a rock and the memory of your own greatness will naw you"

Also Enry MItchell what's wrong with what Rod Steiger said during the film?

Has Wellington nothing to offer me but these amazons I quite enjoyed that line.

I thought many of his lines were quite good to me HE WAS NAPOLEON!!!!!

Captain Gideon

Captain Gideon30 Oct 2011 9:39 a.m. PST

Old Bear what is your problem?

As the old saying goes MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

I've seen this movie more times than you I think where I can sometimes do whole scenes from memory.

Captain Gideon

Ivan the Reasonable30 Oct 2011 9:46 a.m. PST

I can believe that.

Femeng230 Oct 2011 10:07 a.m. PST

"It could just as well be Prussian BLACK!" Only error that stands out in the entire movie.

1234567830 Oct 2011 12:53 p.m. PST

Perhaps one day Gideon will realise that this is a discussion forum. Repartee and banter are part and parcel of what goes on here; if someone can't cope with it, then maybe they should not post;).

huevans01130 Oct 2011 1:40 p.m. PST

Wellington. "Fine lads you have there, colonel."

Highland Colonel. "Oh aye, Wellesley. All from mah own estates. And there's a few there can call me more than just 'colonel', I tell ye."

Wellington. "Err, quite."

colinjallen what is the title of this topic?

As the title says I'm posting my FAVORITE quotes from Waterloo, that's all I'm doing and Old Bear seems like he wants me to post quotes which ARE'NT my favorites so you please tell me what I did wrong?

Also I do know that this is a discussion group colin and what you said is true,BUT there have been times on this discussion group where certain members say something that goes against the grain and get lambasted and jumped on by other members on this group.

For example if 10 members say one thing and someone says an opposing view, then those 10 members go after this person and please don't deny that it has'nt happened because it has.

But this goes back to what Old Bear said and I believe that he's in the wrong, when he said that I did'nt say any quotes from Wellington and I go back what I said earlier "What is the Title of this topic?"

And if Old Bear can remember then he SHOULD'NT have said what he did because he would be in ERROR.

The sadest thing after a battle lost, is a battle won.

Thats basicly the only time Nosey shows any sympathy for the lowly scum of the earth.

welly181530 Oct 2011 5:34 p.m. PST

Can not remember the exact phrase , but goes something like this " I dont know what they will do to the enemy , but they scare me " Wellington speaking to De Lancey the night before the battle in the pouring rain about the 27th Foot .

Maxshadow31 Oct 2011 3:07 a.m. PST

Are you sure i think he said "The sadest thing after a battle lost, is throwing a one!" I think was complaining about failing his recall test for the Scots Greys. :oP

I believe it was said by Napoleon when he saw the Prussians arriving. But I could be wrong.

Ney , mud spattered at the end after the Guard is repulsed

" are you the guard?"

for all its minor inaccuracies a wonderfull film…and

on a grand scale……..

Supercilius Maximus31 Oct 2011 1:23 p.m. PST

Probably the most appallingly scripted historical film I have ever seen. Wellington's "part" seemed to consist of every one-liner ever attributed to him.

Old Bear01 Nov 2011 1:39 a.m. PST

Probably the most appallingly scripted historical film I have ever seen. Wellington's "part" seemed to consist of every one-liner ever attributed to him.

I suspect you will find yourself in a minority on this one. I love all the one-liners, which over many viewings have become intrinsic to my enjoyment of the film, very much like Casablanca, for example. In fact, I'd suggest that once the plot and action sequences become too familiar repeat viewings of such classics are to listen once more to superbly delivered lines – not that I'm suggesting that Waterloo is as good as Casablanca, but I think the theory stands up.
