As a gamer fairly new to this period I am having a difficulty. I want to represent Grenadiers in my British Line Battalions (I'm using the Waterloo rules btw) but am having problems figuring out how to represent them. The Perry's assure me that the bearskins that replaced the mitre caps of the grenadiers were only worn on parade rather than on campaign.

Thus I am now stumped as to how to differentiate them. Help?

Grenadiers had shoulder wings and a solid white plume.

They would have red shoulder wings with white trim and white shako plumes. You need "flank company" figures. The light company would also have shoulder wings but with green plumes and shako cords.

Yep!

If you take a look at the plate for the grenadier company that Connard posted you will also see that the grenadier sergeants carried pikes or spontoons. Adding a chap equipped like this is another good way of making your grenadier companies stand out.

Er, not exactly. Both Grenadier and Center Company sergeants carried the Pike.

Of course you could just show it the Grenadier company, if that's what you want.

Light company sergeants didn't carry it on account of the fact it was a bit of a liability on the skirmish line!

Thanks for the correction Trajanus. Somewhere along the line I'd convinced myself it was only the grenadiers.

I assume Light company sergeants carried muskets, did they ever carry carbines or rifles?

NoLongerAMember27 Oct 2011 12:20 a.m. PST

Light Company Sergeants carried muskets, as did many light company Officers. In Gratton, he even makes a note of the Captain of the lights carrying a privately bought rifle.

Main reason for Sgts would have been ammunition supply and resupply.

The only change for the Guards was that their flank companies wings were blue vs. red. Also, at least one guard battalion at Waterloo had two light companies.

Sergeants of light companies carried the India Pattern Sergeant's Carbine.

This looked similar to the standard musket but was shorter, lighter and had a smaller calibre (0.65" instead of 0.75"). It fired the standard carbine cartridge which contained a 0.615" ball.
