I've spent two days looking at software, and poking around the forums here, and must admit to feeling overwhelmed by the options out there. We have 5 guys who want to hook up online to play D&D every now and then. Video chat would be a BIG preference over typing messages back and forth. That's why iTabletop.com looks like it's the leader, so far. MapTools looks like it might be our second choice (we would need to run a different video conferencing app, I think). Screen Monkey is also a possibility. Any thoughts and direction offered would be GREATLY appreciated. |

If you have a DDI subscription you can get on the Beta for the DnD Virtual Table |

Saber6: Don't have that. Plus, I thought the D&D table would only support 4e? We will be playing 2e. |

Ah It will really support anything, it just features importing 4e PCs and Monsters Heck if it is 2e, why not skype? Do you really need a "table"? |

Yes, we want a virtual table. We need to show miniature placement for combat, etc. |

If you can live without the video chat then skype with the MapTools option is a good bet. Skype gave me no problems back when I used it a couple years ago and maptools seems the right tool for the job – the other options seem to be "over enginereed" for my taste. |

Can the DM use two PCs? One for himself, one with its camera pointed at a table with real miniatures on it? You should technically be able to connect multiple cameras to the DM's PC, but I suspect everything's easier for everyone to deal with if each source only has one video feed. |

link Used that several years ago – and it worked fine. It doesn't have an integrated video (or voice) chat (which I preferred), but there are other bits of software that do that better anyway. It is pretty easy to add pictures to the program, so we scanned in maps and the like. |

It sounds like you would benefit from reading this "Guide to Choosing a VT": link Included in that article is a link to a VT Feature Comparison Chart, which should also prove useful. |

The VTT Comparison Chart has recently been updated, and can now be found here, instead. |
