The weapons on Ships in Birdy the Mighty are eyeballs. They are one of the few things about the Manga/Anime with which I have an issue. They seem to work like Chemical Lasers, but lasers are really sucky weapons for long and fast battles (They'd have to be insanely powerful to be able to do any damage). The concept is still pretty nicely executed though, and it is one that has been used in a lot of other Anime/Manga. Oh! And I would have removed the deflector dish from the saucer of that NX-01 refit. |

The Chris Foss version of the CAT for me, but I'm a Foss fan from way back! |

For gaming (or close enough for comfort) miniatures, I like the no-nonsense, blunt-object look of the Imperial ships from The Legend of Galactic Heroes. The Alliance ships aren't bad either. Currently available in 1/12000 scale collection boxes from Wright Staff. Example: hlj.com/product/WRS810011 |

The top concept for the C.A.T. is probably – there was a really nice 3D render kicking about the net, but I've lost track. However, I do like Foss's work. I'd really like to see some seriously Foss-inspired spacecraft miniatures come out. |

Since the original post implied a small crew analogous to an RPG setting like Traveller, and not a full-on-crewed-by-hundreds battlewagon, I'd have to say the good ol' reliable Millennium Falcon, or a classic Scout ship, or the equally classic Free Trader. Gets you where you want to go, and can fight your way out when you need to leave. |
28mmMan | 20 Oct 2011 8:54 a.m. PST |
That was the original direction
but any positive interaction is welcome these days :) Truthfully it is fun to see what we all like and appreciate in a common subject comparison. ***** The Falcon is a first choice for most of us. Hard not to like it
so weird. What was going through the design minds of Johnston/Cantwell when they came up with the CSP (Corellian Pirate Ship)? Such an odd design. |

If it's a large scale game, I'd go with the Kushan Mothership from Homeworld. It's an all in one with resource processing, construction yard, research facility, up-gradable defenses, a hyper space core, and the ability to cold sleep up to a billion (I think).
For a mid-scale the Kuun-Lan would be awesome. It's a self sustainable deep space mining ship with labs and some processing. From Homeworld Cataclysm
And a small scale ship I'd have to go with the Outlaw Star :D

The Exelion and escorts are from Gunbuster. The two grey and orange "ships" under thrust are the two parts of the Gunbuster itself. |

It's not about what what ship the players would like. Given a Firefly or Aliens size party the ship should be no larger than the Falcon and have no more weapon systems than a B-17. Larger ships would have to be company ships, and all transports, not something designed for kicking aft. Say Silversun, or perhaps a tug towing a big trailer (Nostromo) or long train of containers (Pachyderm). Anything you can build in 28mm and fit on the table all at once is enough for PCs who are privateers like Mal and co., while a government research craft or company transport ship, though bigger, limits adventuring too far for anyone who doesn't want to play a character who has to take orders. Although, the crew were effectively alone in Ulysses 31, and the size of the vessel provides many a possible encounter on the ship. Either way, a ship the PCs have to themselves should never be a capital ship; if they must have a big one then : link Just beware of there being noone to maintain the vending machines. |

that's a BIG dropship Yeah I really like the idea of something that looks like it could drop off 4-5 big tanks or APCs. Wouldn't mind see something like that in 15mm. Thanks for posting the link to that artist other stuff!! Here's a couple concept designs from district 9.

Intrepid Class Starship (aka Voyager) -Not too huge -Reasonable crew size (not as many NPCs to keep track of) -All that awesome Trek tech (transporters, holodecks, tachyon beam whatevers) -Ability to land on planets -Endless supply of shuttles -Top speed of xxxx (* xxxx dependent on scenario requirements) -Easily adapted to any handy alien technology to allow it to go faster than speed xxxx -Ability to do complete damage repair in between gaming sessions |
