Hi,
I did not specially dislike it but I do not know anything about Napoleonic period or games. However my two buddies do, and did not like it at all.

DBN is a nice set of rules.
We play with 6mm on 15mm bases.
However if you want column, square and line at tactical level don't use it.
If you prefer the general' s view use it.

Happy Wargaming.

It wasn't for me. We found the better troops very hard to dislodge.

Yeah, you aren't maneuvering Battalions in these rules. It's Divisions and Corps. You have to accept a certain level of abstraction.

Thanks,

John

I'm a bit biased… I really like DBN!

I think it's a very well thought-out ruleset that manages to fit everything you expect from a Napoleonic system into the DB mechanics without breaking them.

You're never going to get the best out of any ruleset if you don't give it a few goes!

DBN??? I am looking for a higher level Napoleonic game.

Is this a DBA variant for Napoleonics or a stand alone game? Where can I get them?

Thanks,

Al

It's an independent production from KISR (Keep It Simple Rules) using the basic DB game mechanics.

Here's the site:

Stinkin' HORRIBLE rules! And I played it with two of my favorite people, too. I hope to NEVER have the displeasure of playing any sort of DBx game the rest of my days.

Good on you if you like them, though!

How do you really feel?

While I have never played the Naps variant, I have played AWI and ACW variants. At that level of play, I think they accomplish what they set out to do. If I am commanding a division or a corps, I don't care that X battalion deployed two companies of skirmishers to clear some woods or a farm house.

I fall into the crowd that likes to see formations, etc. Part of the pageantry of the period to my mind. Having said this, there is something to be said for a set of rules that handles LARGE battles in a reasonable amount of time. Grand Armee is another set of rules that does this well, I believe.

Unfortunately, I came to gaming during the reign of the Empire rules system. I got used to games taking longer and developing over hours and yes, days. Now that I don't have as much free time, I also don't have the patience for very granular rules systems. In the end, you have to play what you and your mates enjoy.

Our group here in San Antonio has a handful of players playing DBN by the way. My understanding is that if you add in the attrition rules, the game is a bit more playable and I suspect that the higher quality units will be much easier to defeat. I will be trying the rules as a few of my close gaming buddies like DBN with the attrition rules. There will be a participation game at Millennium in Austin on Sunday the 13th of November in Austin, TX.

Do use the attrition rules.

You know, there are some really bad rule sets out there. I am no unabashed fanboy of DBX rule sets. However, they do pretty much what they advertise and usually have a fairly low learning curve. I seem to prefer them when they aren't tied to the 12 element limit. Anyway, by any strech calling all of them 'stinkin horrible' seems to be an over-exaggeration at best. Don't like em, not your preferred scale or dislike the mechanics…..that's cool. We all have our preferences. But stinkin, really?

Thanks,

John

I think they are OK or Corps level,… which is what they are pitched at.
Hardly "stinkin horrible" IMHO.
Cheers

Ha ha ha Nazrat. Tell us how you feel! :oP
I must add to my brief review that the DBN I was referring to was the large variety of home made and magazine published DBX conversions from the early/Mid nineties and not the published ones people are referring to here.

I like DBN and use it for my 2mm troops.

They are from the generals point of view. Leave it to your on the ground commanders to sort out the tactical stuff like forming square.

If your unit of Line Infantry repel the charging Hussars the square was formed well and in time. If not your commander erred.

I have also tried the "2x2 rules which are especially for 2mm figures. Play well but feel a bit disjointed at times.
