I should know this but for some reason I don't, or at least can't remember – was the letter on the tail and wing the squadron designation or the individual aircraft designation?

Neither. It was the group designation.

Squadron and individual aircraft designations were on the fuselage.

Yep – letter and shape = group. Then on the fuselage you'll have a letter code like XX Y where XX identifies the squadron, and Y the individual plane. Unlike RAF stuff, the two-letter and one-letter parts could be on completely different bits of the fuselage (and the latter sometimes missing completely), but the two-letter pairing is always the squadron.
