I should know this but for some reason I don't, or at least can't remember – was the letter on the tail and wing the squadron designation or the individual aircraft designation? Thanks! |

Neither. It was the group designation. Squadron and individual aircraft designations were on the fuselage. |

Yep – letter and shape = group. Then on the fuselage you'll have a letter code like XX Y where XX identifies the squadron, and Y the individual plane. Unlike RAF stuff, the two-letter and one-letter parts could be on completely different bits of the fuselage (and the latter sometimes missing completely), but the two-letter pairing is always the squadron. |
