I know Wings of War is big. What else is out there? I used to play Richtofens War and of course, Dogfight! |

Since Mike is shy, I'll put my usual 2-cents in for his 'Watch Your Six' system it's like nothing else out there, and well worth the looksee. (I have no financial interest
just like his ideas) If something different is on your menu, I'd also invite/welcome a look at my endeavor/exploration into the genre be forewarned: it's definately a 'love-it-or-hate-it' thing. PM me if interested. I'll second TFL's 'Algy' for mainstream games. |

For a light game, WoW. For a bit more involved game, Canvas Eagles or Blue Max. I have played a few others, but generally, anything more complex than CE I don't bother with. |

anything more complex
" This is what inspired my explorations – air combat is treated so strangely (as compared to other genres)
I just don't understand it. weird

relatively light rules with focus on air-combat: Squadron level positioning and tactics and not tracking plane movements in painstaking detail.. Question: Why no link to the rules? Other than that: Algy and WY6

"Why no link to the rules? 'cuz links breed, and if people see your wonderful models/game they won't look twice at my stuff! ; ) |

Duel Of Aces from the Wings At War series (yes, confusingly similar names Wings *At* War was around first though
.) that Tumbling Dice sell. Oddly it's the one air combat era that I don't use Tumbling Dice's models for doubling all distances it's a blast with my 1/144 Wings Of War collection

Watch Your Six (and/or my strange stuff) works best/wonderfully with the TD stuff Dom sells. If you're looking for something that goes beyond the traditional, gladitorial, "here's the enemy, now: fight!" game, you should take a look. PS- using Dom's 1/600 TD minis and my rules the tabletop action can be easily fought at 1:1 ground/mini scale.
PPS – yeah: shameless, I know
luckily, I have no pride to preserve. |

Blue Sky, Wood and Canvas is an unofficial conversion of the Blue Sky series by John Stanoch not a bad mini's game. I also have Blue Max/Canvas Eagles and The Red Baron (I think that's the name of it) but haven't played them. Ace of Aces and it's sequel are good board games play very similar/identical to Air Force/Dauntless. Also have the Ace of Aces series of book games and WoW. All decent games. I use the 1/300 H&R planes. The Gotha is pretty cool though a pita to assemble at that scale. |

I just don't understand it.I think air combat, and to a lesser degree naval combat (especially when wind is involved) too often falls into the "if it doesn't hit all the high notes of 'realism', it's no good". Land combat can be "abstract" and it's considered fine, but flying games without fairly complex maneuvering and altitude rules often get dismissed as just "beer & pretzels" fare.

That's because (imo) 'flying the aircraft' is seen by the majority of gamers as a prerequisite skill
though such a barrier is unique to the genre. Silly
nonsensical

"Richtofen's War" "Triplane" "Wings" "Red Baron" "Blue Max" "Wings of War/Wings of Glory" I don't hold that any of these are "the best", they are just the ones I have very fond memories of. |
