My mate just flogged me some half tracks and he said I can use them for North Africa and Tunisia. Did the British ever use them in the above theaters? |

Did the Americans use them out there? I recall seeing one in German service in a Panzer Colours book. Might use them for that! |

The Africa Korps captured and used a bunch of them (21st Panzer, I think)

The Americans certainly used M3 halftracks in Africa. The M5 is slightly different, having rounded rear corners, whereas the M3 had square corners. |

I'm sure the British did. i've seem pictures of models of them in desert camo, and I'm sure I've seen a photo of one hauling a 17pdr in Tunisia. |

Model box-art is never really a good source. Most of us remember the Matchbox 'Afrika Korps' Wespe and Panther models… ;o) I seem to recall that M5s didn't enter production until December 1942 (can anyone confirm?), which if true, would make it unlikely to see service in North Africa before the end of that campaign. Re paint schemes: They would have been painted in arid camo schemes in Italy as well as Africa. By way of example, I've seen Indian cavalry halftracks painted in arid camo schemes in Italy. Re the 17pdr: What sort of 17pdr was it? If the 17pdr was the 'normal' split-trail type, that would pin it to post-Tunisia, as the beastie didn't enter front-line service until Sicily. They did however, use 17pdrs on 25pdr carriages in Tunisia. |

It was a 17/25pdr. EDIT – oh, and the M3 model I saw (in fact one I have) is an M3 scout car. |

the combat debut was in nov 42 with the torch landings,
there are pics of pritish half tracks towing 17pdrs in tunisia but i doubt if any were used as inf carriers by the british in n/africa |

Thanks chaps I've been had! Ah well. What can I use for British, not very good on trucks and apcs and what have! Shaun have you got something nice in 20mm you could recommend? Also did the Old Man (that being Rob Lane) knock up any German afv's with 150mm infantry support guns on them, for your range? |

how is the old chap?
most british transport was uni carriers or trucks, cmp and bedfords mostly.
your dad did do us a conversion on the lorraine chassis with the 150mm gun and another guy did the 150mm on the pz2 chassis but sadly the early 5 wheeled variant.
not sure wether the moulds are ok.
