Hello everybody!

I'm Roe, doing the project "Tiny Thingamajigs" with 3D printed 1/4800 scale WW2 naval ships
link
(passing mention before by another TMP member: arodrig6 of "Objects May Appear…").

I'm happy to say I've finished the 1st wave of releases for the French Navy (Marine Nationale). The list of ships/sprues are below:

- Battleships Richelieu(1943) + Jean Bart(1942) as would've been completed (aka Richelieu(1940)?)

- Battleships Clemenceau + Gascogne

- BB Alsace + Jean Bart Hybrid BB/CV

- Fantasque-class contre-torpilleurs (large destroyers) '33-'34
Offered in 3/pack and 6/pack

- Heavy Cruisers of Suffren- and Duquesne-class
Please note there are three packs available: one has all ships of both classes and the rest composed of 2xSuffren and 1xDuquesne. See individual item/pack description for more details

- Aircraft carrier Bearn(1939) + 2x MogadorDD(1939)

- Light cruisers La Galissonnière(1940)
Offered in 3/pack and 6/pack

- Aircraft carrier Joffre(1940) (2/pack)
Note there's also a pack combining this with the Dunkerque-class BCs

- Le Hardi class destroyers of 1942 (6/pack)

- Redoutable class submarines, 1931 (8/pack)

- Battlecruisers Dunkerque(1940) + Strasbourg(1942)
Note there's also a pack combining this with the Joffre CVs

WIPs/preview/close-up renders can be found in my blog:
roetengco.blogspot.com
Please bear in mind the actual sizes of the models, some structures may look out-of-proportion some may even be out of place: for support/strength of structures as well as limitations imposed by the 3D printer/s…

Also extending my gratitude to the 1/4800th Naval Wargaming group (some members are also here at TMP):
games.groups.yahoo.com/group/1-4800thNavalWargaming

…and to the authors/publishers of various books I've used as references.

Cheers and best regards!

Any chance of seeing those BB/CV hybrids in 1/6000? They are unavailable in that scale otherwise.

Arrigo06 Oct 2011 10:30 a.m. PST

Having seen your renders… any chance to have the fleet in 1/6000 and/or 1/3000? My naval gaming is in these two scales, and I do not want to do also 1/4800 but your ships are quite awesome.

OK, I'm a little confused. Which image is of an actual item as opposed to a computer rendering?

They look fantastic, btw…just not sure which is "hard copy" and which is "virtual."

Thanks,
Ed

KNOSSOS06 Oct 2011 1:12 p.m. PST

Damn they look good!I have M.Y. Minis hybrids(1/3000)but they're nothing like yours, although the Jean Bart was one of his better ones.

mattatknsn06 Oct 2011 3:07 p.m. PST

Thanks fellas!

@McKinstry
Cheers! The Jean Bart BB/CV has been requested to be done in 1/6000 (as you mentioned they're unavailable there); I'll see what I can come up with for the smaller scale nonetheless (the models have been "maximized" for 1/4800)

@Arrigo
Sorry mate, nothing for 1/3000 nor 1/6000 anytime soon, unless the items are not offered by companies/scale (Figurehead 1/6000 in case of the hybrid BB/CVs, and Navwar for 1/3000).

@Ed von HesseFedora
Sorry, no actual items at the moment, all images in my blog with regards to the 1/4800 ships are all computer renders. I understand having pics of the actual products are paramount, but the change in policy; adding shipping charges to the orders, has hit me really hard being in Asia.

@KNOSSOS
Thanks! To note that this project aims to have 1/4800 ships not offered by CinC (their ships were my inspirations, very much detailed considering their size; and manually/traditionally done!). I also did consider 1/3000 (scratchbuilt a Strasbourg) but tabletop real estate had a major factor (coffee tables and/or whatever's free at the office).

Cheers!
Roe

Although Navwar has an unbeatable depth to there ranges, there are some missing.Smaller ships are missing from most fleets except Britain/Germany.Although their last
release was the Marne/Amiens gunboats for action against
the Thai forces.Good luck with your 1/4800s!Those guys have waited a long time for new stuff!

Arrigo07 Oct 2011 2:41 a.m. PST

Roe,

I got your point, still I am thinking that if you can just rescale your prints like Arordrig6 is doing you can be the hero for many people… your french fleet is better than Navwar offerings… of course if you are just trying to persuade me to go 1/4800 you are having a startling and unexpected success…

the will to resist is weak… too weak… I have to…

mattatknsn07 Oct 2011 6:25 a.m. PST

Hi everybody!

@McKinstry: will have the BB/CV for the 1/6000 community soon ;)

@KNOSSOS: Many thanks! Will keep this in mind as it seems Navwar is still expanding their range (was very close to ordering the Battle for Philippine Sea pack :D) Wouldn't be much for now as I (together with the group) would like have to have a viable fleet for every (other) major nation in WW2 for the first series of releases :D

@Arrigo: Cheers mate and again, thanks! As for rescale, I can scale up, but unfortunately not down without further editing to comply with physical printing limits (and the model rejected). Also, for example, there were comments about CL La Galissonniere's cranes being too large for the close-up view, or odd looking, that would need to be thinner and/or repositioned for 1/3000; or at most removed for 1/6000 (will look way out of proportion for such scale) :(

Nonetheless, thanks again everybody and best regards!

Roe,

I understand your point, still a test of the Dunkerque or the Richelieu in 1/3000 would be nice even with the 1/4800 bases. They are sculpts not scale model and the detail will always be exaggerated (you can say the same for 28mm figures).

Other than that looking forward to the Regia Marina.

Hi Arrigo,

For the Richelieu, would it be the first pair? Richelieu1943+JeanBart1942?

Cheers!

Arrigo08 Oct 2011 7:01 a.m. PST

yep, it is a ship I would love to paint… I am an old battleship lover and I have been in love with the Richelieu and the Vanguard closely followed by Yamato and Littorio… ok I like also the US treaty ones… but the richelieu is quite special!

If she works in 1/3000 it can e a rather nice start (otherwise I will wait until the Regia Marina is ourt and jump in 1/4800 probably). Almost everyone do the same ships anyway (look at Navwar and skytrex fro example). I have nothing agaisnt Navwar… but your renders…. they are comparable with GHQ…

Look, the french fleet was on the book from ages, I have already RN and RM in 1/6000, bought when figurehead was very cheap and english… reincorfec the 1/6000 stuff a bit when Richard and Zoe took over the european distribution. But the current prices have gone up. The french box is 53£ !!! I still remember when I rodered the italian box for less than 20 £ and my mom was screaming "how many ships are you taking out of that box!".

Now I am tempted to switch to 1/3000 at least for surface engagement and keep the 1/6000 for combines ones (the french will eventually come anyway), your french ships really need to be tried in 1/3000. The price is quite high compared to the metal ones, comparable to GQH, bit if the quality is good as the renders show, at least for capital ships you can have an interesting offering.

mattatknsn10 Oct 2011 3:55 p.m. PST

Hi Arrigo,

I admit the price is quite high for the 1/3000 (even for two ships, 2x 1/2400 GHQ Richelieus at $26-ish, 2x 1/3000 Navwar at $5-ish); straight scale up and priced as volume, in a way everything went up x4 (1.6*1.6*1.6).

Will try and further 'scoop out' the insides to lower the cost though (whenever I do get the time, in between desk job and this project). Hopefully if you could inform me (matt_atknsn [at] hotmail [dot] com) on a time frame, I could offer you the result (at the moment I'm nitpicking RN Illustrious CV for 1/4800)

Cheers!

Arrigo11 Oct 2011 3:31 a.m. PST

Roe,

your price is still competive with GHQ, checked the Richelieu and it it is still less per ship. Quality seems comparable, hopefully i will have money on a couple of week to try out. No need to scoop out until we made the try in 1/3000. If the realt thing is comparable to the render (I noted the disclaimer!) you have a lot of potential. GHQ quality at reduced price and in 1/3000 scale? Have we a winner?

Cheers Arrigo, no hurries then :)

Of course, if anybody has any requests/suggestions (and coincides with the [current and/or immediate] releases), please don't hesitate to message/contact me. With that, very much appreciated Arrigo/everyone!

Cheers!
