A sports stadium figured in the fighting during the assault on Port Said in 1956. I'm pondering how best to make such a model. First thoughts are to trace a template with an oval interior and square exterior on perhaps foamcore, and make the interior oval slightly larger with each successive template, to simulate the seating rows and then stack each layer of foamcore on the next, then cut out entrances on the exterior walls.

Anyone have any ideas on how this could be done, or have already scratch-built a stadium that I could use as inspiration?

What scale do you have. There are models out there that might save you some time. But outside of that I would use Pink board and cut out circles and then invert them. largest on top and so on.

If you have ever watched the show "Ace of Cakes", they make stadium cakes all the time. You could gleam some good ideas out of that show.

regardless of your scale, stadium models tend to be huge. I did a Phillippines game that featured both a baseball field and a sort stadium. When we used 1/285 miniatures, the structures were huge compared to the game's ground scale.

I'd go with the plan you outlines, possibly only using basswood instead of foam if ou are working at a smaller scale.

Good luck – looking forward to pictures!

Thanks, basswood or pink board is a good idea. I'm playing with Command Decision, 1" – 50ft, so you're right, the classic disparity between miniature scale and ground scale would be a problem.

The most likely solution will be to downscale the stadium slightly, and it should be only slightly too big.

LOL!

That's why I was using for the Phillippine game. Ground scale is 1" = 50 YARDS. So a football field is 2" (excluding the end zones). If you build it to scale it looks great, but it does not fit the area. Soooo….you'll have to downscale it slightly.
